hey its a belt right
Now that The Secret World is Buy 2 Play it seems like the number of players has jumped by volumes. Anyone here one of those players? I've been playing MMORPGs for most of my adult life, but nothing really stuck out like the brutal puzzle-solving of TSW.

For the uninitiated, it's a game based on secret societies and their attempts to protect* the world from nefarious happenings, with lots of horror themes from writers like Lovecraft and Poe. It's not revolutionary like many people thought it would be, but let's say that the investigative missions are so difficult that the game comes with its own built in browser that is NECESSARY for mission completion. It's challenging in an entirely different way than just impossible raid bosses or months of grinding.

EDIT: Illuminaughty hustle, brother. VVV

ARE YOU REALLY FEELING IT, BROTHER?!
I used to play back when it first went Buy2Play. An outright toxic endgame community turned me off that part of the game pretty quick. The community makes up gear-score requirements way above what's actually needed, even for speed-running, not to mention there's usually drama in the form of an ongoing argument in the Agharta chat (read: LFG chat) without fail. That and I built to be a non-leech healer, which is apparently useless in the meta. The updates all are very high quality with good writing, and I've come back to play most of them to date, but they really don't hold the game alone.

All that said, the story, ambience, and graphic style all are great and it's worth the price of admission just to play through the main quest. The voice acting is surprisingly good for an MMO that didn't blow it's entire budget on it like some others (*cough*TOR*cough*). The characters, from the NPCs you interact with regularly to the side ones who only give you one quest, are all colorful and well-written.

As CultofHey said, there's more to the quests than gathering bear asses. The investigative missions are amazing, immersive, and feel right at home in this type of game. If you like the puzzles in survival horror games like the earlier Silent Hills or the point and click adventure games of the 90s, you'll get a real kick out of these.

While I probably won't be returning myself anytime soon (unless you guys end up putting a society together or something), if you like the horror genre in any flavor, aren't afraid of an MMO that will challenge you mentally (both in puzzles and mechanics), and can be patient with the steep learning curve of the skill system, I highly recommend you give the game a whirl. It's buy to play, not especially pricey, and often on sale for 15 dollars or less.

Also, Templars4lyfe blud.
