CHAMP

Eh, not like I bought any of the DLC characters anyway. Just the stages. And that one does not look like it'll be avalable for the 3DS. |

Also people are calling him an "anime swordsman" because he is (or at least appears to be) a clone of Ike, who falls under the anime swordsman branch of characters, which there are a lot of in Smash 4 already (Marth, Ike, Luci, Roy, Shulk). Like how Fox and Falco are "spacies" and Kirby, Jiggs and Peach are "floaties". It's less to do with character and more playstyle.

From what I remember the "rules" were must have originated in a video game and must have appeared on a Nintendo system at some point both of which are requirements Cloud technically fills. There was also a must be from something suitable to transition to a fighting game but that was specifically discounting Villager from Brawl (And to a lesser extent Pac Man and miis). The rules are really more guidelines, and Cloud is technically within them anyway. If you'd asked me yesterday what Cloud's odds of being in Smash were I'd have said next to zero but looking at the 3rd parties at a whole, it honestly does make sense. Sonic, Mega Man, Pac Man, Ryu, these are all super iconic character and Cloud fits right into that list. Ryu and Pac Man might have more ties to Nintendo that Cloud but they're certainly not known for their connections to Nintendo. And Sonic is know for his rivalry against Nintendo. It seems like being iconic is more important being strongly tied to Nintendo. I've never even played ffvii but I know Cloud was on dream match levels of like Sonic or Mega Man for smash. I'm pretty sure Cloud was among some of the first characters hacked into Brawl when move editing became a thing. With the just another anime swordman approach eh, I remember a lot of people reacting that way to Shulk but he turned out to be a really interesting character. A lot of animations look similar to Ike's but he seems like he'll be a different archetype and has some unique mechanic going on with the limit gauge. In general I feel like people don't give Smash 4 enough credit for its newcomers moveset design. Most of them either have some unqiue mechanics or feel like a well done representation of their source material, clones aside Greninja is the most mechanically boring newcomer I can think of and I'd rank Greninja as fairly average so that's not a bad sign. I doubt he'll be quite as impressive as Ryu was but I'm sure they'll make Cloud feel like his own character. |

In the age of DLC used as cross-marketing, I'm basically saying that any perceived rules or guidelines don't really apply anymore. Part of Nintendo's business strategy that was partially executed under the last portion of Iwata's leadership was to seek more partnerships with different companies and to push Nintendo characters into different media spaces. The sine qua non of that type of agreement being that you'll (hopefully) do the same for that company you're working with. Hence Cloud in Smash. It's a marketing win-win for both companies, regardless of vocal minorities on the internet. And considering Square's many missteps of the last few years with regards to Final Fantasy, they could use some of those. Edited by Mr. Satan Overlay Face, Nov 13 2015, 09:38 AM.

Order! Order in the court!

The most clone part of Cloud is his Final Smash, and I don't mind that. He has a projectile B move as an "anime swordsman", multihit rush move, different types of up b, and LIMIT BREAK plus finishing touch. |

Fair if we're talking playstyle divisions though honestly I'd just use the general category of swordsman. A lot of those guys, Cloud included, often share just as many similarities with like Link or Meta Knight. That said I'm a nerd who always studies these trailers closely and Cloud is definitely not an Ike clone. We seem to see all his normal and specials in it. All the aerials (except maybe up air) look about the same as Ike and his jab seems pretty similar to Ike/Shulk be with a noticeable change (Cloud moves forward during the 3rd swing), that's about it though. He's got a Mega Man style sliding down tilt and his others have more in common with Link than Ike. Seems to have pretty unique smashes (though the down tilt seems mechanically similar to Toon Link's). And then his specials all seem different with a projectile, a melee flurry attack and a cyclone spin thing. The Up B is kinda similar to Ike's but rather than a straight up than down it seems to be a straight up with the option to attack again and come slamming down which makes a huge difference for recovery. And that's not mentioning his ability to limit break and power up specials. He's another swordfighter but he's not gonna just be a slightly different Ike. |

Lets be honest, if we were going to have THE anime swordsman, it wouldn't be Cloud. I'm sick of people calling him that for being in ONE CGI movie. that would be like calling Sabin THE anime martial artist. If you want THE anime swordsman, then you should look at Rurouni Kenshin. I like that Cloud is in Smash, it makes the most sense with the FF& remake in the works, everyone is hype for that so it boggles me that they don't like that the lead character from said game is in Smash. |

I played The Game and got stuck with Dunn for a month.

Well, I'm hype for this like most others perhaps are. But this does raise a much more massive question now due to him being here: Will Small Match Wallace finally get that major Nintendo push with at least a trophy, or even a Mii Costume? |

The joke is with the label "anime swordsman" is that people apply it to any Japanese-styled character with a sword, regardless of whether they're actually in anime. And, let's be honest, if you think of "anime looking guy with a sword" Cloud is one of the first things that comes to mind. |

I honestly don't care who they put in at this point, since chances are Im not switching from Falcon anyways (and DK/Megaman side), I just don't wan't to fight someone thats irritating to fight against. Ill await Judgement on LET'S MOSEY until he's actually out. Midgar looks dope as hell at least. hopefully it doesn't have something stupid like what fucking Flying Man did for Magicant. |

It probably will be on 3DS. Although the official site isn't offering any release dates, the DLC page lists Cloud and Midgar as a bundle, similar to Ryu and Somebody's Roof. What I imagine will happen is something similar to Gaur Plain: The Wii U version will have all the crazy stuff going on with Odin slicing the stage in half and Bahamut launching Megaflare, while the 3DS version will just be a Battlefield clone with a couple of tracks from FFVII. Just speculation. |

Vote for Katt. Do it. DO IT!

Yes cause he really needs the advertising...sheesh. Also even describing BM as niche, putting aside the fact that the Black Mage is up there with Moogles, Chocobos, and maybe Cactuars as things that represent the legacy of Final Fantasy, let us not forget that BM represent the mold in which all JRPG offensive magic users are based off of. |

More sizzle than a rasher of bacon.

It's not really advertising as much as he's more likely to bring in sales than just about anyone else. It's a business move, and if it's not intentionally screwing over fans (adding the "wrong" character isn't that), then it's a good move to make. Plus I think it signifies a decent chance that FF7's remake lands on the NX, so this might be a way of building to that. |

I think you're letting your inner-fan get in the way of understanding that this is a purely business decision. More exposure in Smash Bros. is better than none, regardless of how prominent that character is outside of Smash. Also your view of JRPG history is skewed. Dragon Quest 1 and the original Megami Tensei (also important franchises) both predate Final Fantasy and feature spellcasting systems. If you want to be even somewhat correct, all JRPGs have the western RPG Wizardry to thank for being an inspiration for what was to come later, which included casters and wizards.
