http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e140616a.html After a years long stream of fan abuse, middling sales, poor quality, and Ace Attorney 5, Capcom's shareholders have declined to renew the takeover defense of their company. What this means, basically, is that it is now entirely possible that a person or company can purchase 50% or more of Capcom's stock and would become the new principle owner of Capcom and its plethora of IPs. Now, the value of Capcom's stock has gone up since this press release from what I've gathered due to immediate stock investments, so 50% of that trove is mightily expensive, making it less probable that such a purchase could actually take place now or in the near future, but the sharks have been given legal permission to circle the boat. Given the incredible library of franchises that Capcom possesses, IF a buyout were to happen, it would shake the gaming world at its roots with unpredictable results. Fans are already speculating and wishing for certain companies to make the investment, with many such as myself hoping for Nintendo to lay down the cash and immediately release Legends 3, but a fair point was made to me that the competitive Fighting Game community would suffer to console restriction. Namco-Bandai comes to mind for a company that could manage fighting games, but it leaves other franchises in a potential lurch. As well as those two, Sega comes to mind as a company that, while having a history of mistakes of its own, isn't as obsessed with the CoD dollars as other large gaming companies are. In the back of my mind, I also see Square-Enix peeking in, as they have something of a history of purchasing game companies themselves, but if they were in the position to buy, I feel like they would have gotten Atlus. Exercise optimism with caution, for EA Games is also a rich company with a history of purchasing other companies. Discuss. |

Remember last year when we were excited for this?
|
Maybe Activision? On the one hand, they've pretty much left Blizzard alone. On the other hand, a lot of the other stuff that got picked up in the merger with Vivendi got killed, notably Sierra. |

I was thinking it over more as the night went on, and the more I think about it, the more I kind of want Nintendo to purchase them wholesale. I feel like the temporary dent left by the console restriction of Street Fighter and MvC would eventually just lead to that community buying Wii Us in droves. Also, if Capcom is owned by Nintendo, they should just call future installments "Disney Vs. Nintendo" and make Namco-Bandai do all their fighting games by second party. |

If there's a hostile takeover, it'll be a company with cash to spend. Sony isn't in a great way on that front. It would be a smart move for Microsoft as they really could use a foothold in Japan. Nintendo is the ideal but I think if Capcom is going to be bought, it'll be by an entertainment company looking to diversify its interests or a mobile company looking to monetize Capcom's valuable yet dormant IPs. Gree could do it easily and GungHo has been making acquisitions recently (though I'm not sure on if they have the cash to buy the controlling stake in Capcom). I wouldn't sing the praises of a buyout just yet. As bad as Capcom managment is now, putting shareholders in that just want to poach IPs for monetization won't improve things for anyone but the accountants.
I don't think any sane person is worried about this. EA isn't interested in Capcom's IPs or buying audience. Edited by Mr. Satan Overlay Face, Jun 17 2014, 09:50 AM.

It's hard to think of companies that would be interested in Capcom. Would it be possible just to buy Capcom's IPs separately? If so, here would be my guesses for what the Big 3 would want: Nintendo: Mega Man, Monster Hunter (maybe?), Ace Attorney Sony: Monster Hunter for certain, Street Fighter (and the majority of Capcom's fighting game IPs) Microsoft: Dead Rising, Resident Evil, Strider Oh, and not to mention it's gonna be a big struggle for Monster Hunter, whoever buys it. It's pretty much the only steady Capcom series, profit-wise. Ooh, Square Enix might! Edited by Sciencejoe, Jun 17 2014, 10:13 AM.

Auctioning off IPs separately would be the fire sale scenario. I think it's unlikely at this stage. |

This is gonna be a really interesting thing to watch. If Nintendo buys it, they'll most likely show love to Mega Man (since they actually like listening to people), but fighting games are screwed, and even then, good luck for anything non-Street Fighter related. If Sony does, they'll probably give everything a good balance. A lot of people in the FGC seem to favor Sony, I'm sure they'd be smart enough to give Mega Man attention (as for "M-MUH LEGENDS 3!", Legends was pretty much exclusive to the Playstation anyway, so there's a good chance that Sony would work with Inafune on releasing it...then again, they were only developing it for the 3DS, so yeah.), they could always use JRPGs like Monster Hunter, etc. I think this might actually be the best bet! If Microsoft does...uh oh. Dead Rising will definitely have something, but with every other series, it'll either get ignored completely or butchered into an unrecognizable mess. Most likely |
