Wakfu is a Tactical MMORPG from the French company Ankama. It's deep as hell, with a fantastic art style and alot of fantastic mechanics in it. Wakfu is big on the player involvement in the in-game government and environment in each of the areas. You can extinct an entire species of animals in one area, or propogate them to bring them back. You can plant seeds and saplings to make huge gardens and orchards, which are alot of the resources you need for crafting. Anyone with a subscription can take part in the in-game government, which gives you control over alot of the hourly and daily quests each area has, or perhaps a position as the head guard or primary environmentalist.
The game has a tutorial area you can go through before you choose a class that teaches you all the mechanics of the game. There's an introductory questline afterwards that takes you to about level 10-12, and from there you need to level up to 18 in order to join one of the four nations.
Iop; Iop's Heart. Iops are your most basic class, and the game makes jokes about that CONSTANTLY. While they are the easiest to play, they still do fantastic damage in various ways across their spell trees. However, they are mainly JUST damage-dealers, and one of the least involving classes. A great class to start your game with, but you'll want to graduate once you get bored with them.
Cra; Cra's Arrow Cras are the archery-usin' elf folk. They're all about zoning and using beacons to make their spells AoE instead to hit enemies they might not have Line of Sight on. Another simple class, but more involving than Iops, as Cra have to focus on kiting their enemies quite often. Squishy glass cannons and great Damage per Turn types.
Feca; Feca's Shield Feca are the tankiest motherfuckers in the entire game. Their playstyle uses a Glyph/Armor mechanic, which is something you can use on the ground for area buffs and debuffs, allies for buffs, and enemies for debuffs. They're very support-based and can absorb a hell of a lot of damage. They even have an ability that makes them better damage dealers based on how well they block attacks!
Sram; Sram's Shadow Srams are your sneaky stabby assassins in this game. They have a universal "weak point" mechanic which can be used to power up the last spell of each tree and utilize the extra effects they come with. Srams can also go invisible and make a double that can move enemies around or lock them in place. They deal a fuckload of damage, and are great solo or in groups.
Sacrier; Sacrier's Blood Sacrier are an interesting mix of roles. You can play them as blood knights that get high damage bonuses depending on how much damage they take, as fantastic map controllers, or as tanks that lock enemies in place. Sacriers can take hits for allies, armor themselves with their own coagulated blood, and even stave off death if they're lucky enough.
Osamodas; Osamodas's Whip Osamodas are a rather interesting class. They are the "Pokemon Trainer" class of the game, being able to capture most enemies to summon them later. They have a default summon called a Gobgob which they can give attacks to, and even fuse with it to become an incredibly powerful dragon.
Enutrof; Enutrof's Fingers Enutrofs are the richest goddamn people in the game. Their very presence makes loot drop more, and their abilities can make that happen EVEN MORE. They have a pet called a Drheller that give them extra offensive opportunities, and they can fuse with it to become an immensely powerful Drhellzerker. Enutrofs are fantastic damage-dealers, and some people consider them a necessity in parties for their drop rate boosts.
Xelor; Xelor's Sandglass Xelors are time-manipulating mummies. They have a Tick/Tock mechanic which causes their moves to have different effects depending on what kind of turn it is, either Tick or Tock. Xelors can make enemies move later in the round, remove AP to make enemies able to attack less, or find ways to deal even more damage. People praise the Xelor on their DPT capabilities, and it is not unfounded praise. Xelors are strong as hell.
Eniripsa; Eniripsa's Hands Eniripsas are little fairies that heal the everloving fuck out of you. They have a tree specifically for healing, however they have glyphs with alot of on-death effects that can be cast on enemies to do all sorts of things for your allies. They have another tree for damage dealing and some map control as well. Eniripsa have a little bunny rabbit named Coney that they can summon to keep the healing-per-turn high.
Pandawa; Pandawa's Pint Pandawas are panda people that use booze PG-13 "bamboo milk" to get drunk Merry, boosting their damage. They can even get enemies Dizzy, which is a debuff that lowers their damage resistance. Pandawas are good tanks, with the ability to lift allies to remove the threat of damage, or lift enemies to force their focus on the Pandawa. They're rather weak at the moment, but are getting a revamp in December, so it might be good to hold off until then.
Ecaflip; Ecaflip's Coin Ecaflips are the loyal priests of the god of RNG, and two of their three skill trees are RNG-based. They can either play dice games or card games to attack their enemies, or use their feline attributes to deal damage and heal allies. An Ecaflip can also summon a cat tree, which they have a chance of jumping to when they take damage. If they jump on top of it, they can't even be attacked for the rest of that turn, while they can still hurt people anyways. Their Tarot passive makes each turn have a different effect, with positive, neutral, and negative effects all in the mix.
Sadida; Sadida's Shoe Sadida are weird hippie voodoo druids that use dolls to support, tank, debuff, heal... Their dolls can essentially do it all. They have alot of support and debuff opportunities aside though, and are quite useful if they know what they are doing. They can make Voodolls, which can be linked to an enemy or an ally. All damage and healing cast on the Voodoll is transferred to its target, effectively fucktupling someone's range.
Rogue; The Rogue Ruse Rogues are pretty self-explanitory. They use guns, flippy bullshit with knives, and bombs to pull off Batman-like plans that they can start setting up turns in advance. Only the Cra can kite finer than the Rogues, but Rogues have all sorts of debuffs and dodging abilities they have access to. For the love of god don't let your allies walk in to your bomb wall.
The Masqueraiders Masqueraiders are another interesting modal class. They have three masks which each have three abilities that wearing them unlocks. The masks also have conditions that confer buffs to the Masq or its allies depending. The Coward mask is a support mask that has healing and zoning capabilities. You get a bonus to heals done and possible extra movement if you get away from enemies with this mask on. The Classic mask is all about maneuverability and critting the hell out of your enemies. Critting with this mask on gives a damage boost to your allies and might even give you more opportunities to attack that turn. The Psychopath mask is AoE as fuck, and you deal and take more damage the more times you get hit.
Foggernaut; Foggernaut's Steam Foggernauts are robot people that have an entire elemental tree that no other class has; Stasis. Stasis damage is based off your three highest damages. Foggernauts can also tank well and deal alot of damage, and they have alot of modes they can go in to. A very fun class once you can figure them out.
Wakfu is free to play, and is on Steam if you like ease of download. Once we have enough people playing, we could perhaps look in to a VGCW guild, but we would have to all pick a single nation if that were to happen.
I played Dofus, Wakfu's prequel that recently celebrated its tenth birthday, for years. If you compare MMOs by their communities, Dofus is the French equivalent of Runescape, with really young and immature players but once you found yourself a good guild, you can start to enjoy the game and realize it's pretty great.
I consider Wakfu to be vastly superior, and I was a beta-tester on this game (during the closed beta, too). But sadly none of my friends and guildmates were interested by it as much as I was, so I never really got into it after its release... and pretty much wasted a year-long subscription.
I'l love to get back on this game and join this VGCW guild if it becomes a thing.
Oh shit yeah, that's something I should have mentioned.
Ankama is a fucking crazy company and have effectively found a way to get media in a shitton of formats. They have the Wakfu and Dofus MMOs, they have their Krosmaster BOARD GAME, they have comics, and they have the fucking anime.
The anime is on Netflix if anyone has an account there, but it's best watched in the original french with subs. The dub, while official, isn't great.
So when are we making a VGCW Guild in here? I've got a bit of a backlog but if we can buddy up in game I'd totally pick it back up. Playing a Sacrier right now, pretty fun for a first class.

I don't really have the dosh to start my own guild, and I wanna wait for enough intrest in the game from other forumgoers.
From what it looks like, its "subscription" service is a bit more of a hassle to set up than I'm used to, in that you have to constantly buy Ankama's funbux in order to actually pay for a subscription.
I suppose that's one way of getting people to keep pouring money in.
Don't get me wrong; I'm interested in the game, but I was actually considering the subscription option offered.
There was a bit of an icky figuring out period but I think I've broken into it now.
Turn-based grid strategy combat is very interesting when you've never played a game that's had it before. Especially so when it's one of these F2P online MMORPGs.
I picked a Feca to start with because I interpreted the description as "Support Tank" and I love playing those. May not have been the smartest idea when they're technical as hell.
I downloaded it, but it says Java isn't updated to 1.6, only, it's at 8. I download 1.6 and it says "A newer version is already installed." I don't want to delete Java 8 to just download 1.6.

There's an option to use Ankama's version of Java in the launcher, so use that instead.
For anyone who has watched the show, the OVAs have landed and are being translated by #based frenchie anon. The first two are already translated, and the third will be done on Wednesday.
