A rose, by any other name...
It's not $80 for a 'complete' game, it's $80 for three games.

Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations share about roughly 10 chapters (essentially everything up to The Choice), but even ignoring that, each game is roughly the size of Awakening in unique content.

The fact that Nintendo refuses to come out and say that is one of the most inexplicable unforced errors in marketing that I've ever seen.

The removal of face-rubbing is baffling. If it were rubbing something else I'd sort of get it, but it's just a face. You're not exactly groping anyone.

I hate when content gets cut, but what can you do. It's been like that for NA since, well forever.
This tbh

It's really nothing new

If you read the actual text of the e-mail, it's not much of a response at all, probably because it's a customer support rep who had to field that question.

-"the removal of the petting mini game in Fire Emblem Fates has not been announced"
-"we do not have any information that tells us this will or won’t happen"

This is pretty much the stock answer from Nintendo employees when questioned about hot rumors or news items since we all know they're notoriously secretive. It's really no different than the common "we have nothing to announce at this time".

We shall see where it goes.

It's still good news in a way. Now nintendo gets to see the fan outcry, and more importantly lost sales, that result from the removal without having to announce it themselves. If they were planning to remove it, they can judge the financial impact and Chang their mind without being seen as changing their mind. The only issue in this instance is it might end in a delay so close to release.

Or they were never planning to in the first place, which would mean the same effect as the above without any risk of delay.

Based on what I've seen, cutting the feture after this would be the least financially successful option, but I don't have enough data to say for sure.

I believe you're overestimating just how much of an impact the removal of the feature would effect sales. Nobody has said a negative thing about the game in previews for it + the Smash push of Corrin + virtually no competition from any other game releasing on a Nintendo system (closest would be Bravely Second and they're decently spaced away from each other) + the feature being relatively unimportant to the game. I don't see how this won't surpass Awakening in sales.

The Fire Emblem Fates Revelation storyline is the third path. This one allows a player to recruit all characters and see what happens if they choose not to pick a side. It will be available March 10, 2016 and cost $19.99 for those who don't get the Special Edition.

Here is the full schedule for Fire Emblem Fates’ map DLC. These can be purchased separately, or you can pay $17.99 to get all 11 in the Map Pack 1.

February 19, 2016: Free Before Awakening, with an Exalt’s Brand or Hero’s Brand as the first time reward and pebble every time.
February 25, 2016: $2.49 Boo Camp with experience as a reward.
February 25, 2016: $2.49 Beach Brawl with event illustration reward.
March 3, 2016: $2.49 Ghostly Gold with gold as a reward.
March 3, 2016: $2.49 Museum Melee with weapons as a reward.
March 17, 2016: $2.49 Royal Royale with an item that raises all stats as a first time reward and a Dread Scroll/ Ebon Wing every time.
March 24, 2016: $4.49 Hidden Truths I and II with Fell Brand / First Blood rewards.
March 31, 2016: $1.99 Vanguard Dawn with Vanguard Brand reward.
April 7, 2016: $1.99 Anna on the Run with Anna joining the party as the first time reward.
April 14, 2016: $1.99 Ballistician Blitz with Sighting Lens that adds the Ballistician class reward.
April 21, 2016: $1.99 Witches’ Trial with Witch’s Mark that adds the Witch class reward.

Edit: Posted Image

Oh and on April 14, people will also be able to get a free Gift from Anna from the Dragon’s Gate. It will give players either one free Sighting Lens or Witch’s Mark.

Event illustration is an odd reward to give, considering it's likely gonna be found online. GIMME THE MONEY DLC THOUGH. Let me be able to cheese the game by being able to afford stuff!

Another reason to wait until the 10th of March to get the game for me.

Also ever since the game was announced I've been seeing this as an Oracle of Ages/Seasons setup rather than a Pokemon Red/Blue setup. Eagerly awaiting my chance to get the Special Edition if I can.

Oh yeah, hell back when the petting feature was first found out there was just as big an outcry against its very existence and there is now about it being removed (I've even seen a handful of people saying great maybe I'll buy the game now about the removal). Still both those groups are definitely just vocal minorities. Fates will do just fine with or without face rubbing.

So, someone from Polygon was recently streaming FE Fates up to Chapter 7 after the choice to give info about the basics, and the big thing got answered.

Spoiler: click to toggle

The only thing that is missing from it is no touching. You still get all dialogue from the character, however.
