If you google Benoit, first thing you find is Chris Benoit. Name change is common in this series. For example, Owain was named "Wood" (or Eudes) and Severa was named Serena in JP. Serena was in Sacred Stones, so I can see why some gets renamed.

I can understand if people would think they changed Benoit because of the whole thing with WWE's Benoit, but I very much doubt thats the case, if it was the case then they should change Armstrong's name in Rising because of Lance Armstrong's thing with doping, or they should change Isis' name in Smite because of the terrorist group of the same name. Its dumb to think they changed the name because of something that happened many years ago.

Thats just how I see it

Seconded. Name changes can happen for any number of reasons. Sometimes NOA gets it right (like changing Tellius' Brom from his original name "Chap". He might as well have been called "Bloke". Or "Dude". Or "Fellow".), sometimes they drop the ball (Akaneia's Macellan originally being called "Mishelan". As in Michelin. He's built like the Michelin Man.), and sometimes they just don't make any sense (Tellius' Kieran being Kevin in Japan. Why? They're both ordinary Anglophone male given names that begin with K and end in N). Every game is a mixed bag. I reason that it's best not to get too attached to the JP names to begin with. Like trying to learn all the Japanese names of new Pokemon before their English names are revealed.

---

As for Benoit, it's a fairly ordinary given name in French, so they could have left it. BUT I do concede that you're either going to have connotations of Chris Benoit or Pope Benedict. And neither of those are particularly good associations.

:idunno: Maybe Benny's full name is Benedict in the English release and he just shortens it to Benny because he's bored of people joking about poached eggs around him. That's my half-witted guess. I'm eager to be disproven when the game comes to Europe though. (Please let that be soon.)

Worrying about how you look in public with regards to what game you're playing is a flimsy defense of censorship and pointlessly self-apologizing. In reality, no one cares what you're playing on 3DS when you're on public transit, between classes or in a park, period.

Call it what it is: you're self-policing what you perceive as embarrassing. The same could be said for watching grown men hugging each other in a ring on your phone or video game characters doing the same thing.

I sometimes catch up with VGCW on my shift breaks and I could not give less of a fuck if I get "caught" looking at something "weird". I have my headphones in for courtesy to others on break and it's not a big deal.

As long as you're not being outwardly obnoxious to other people in the same relative area as you, enjoy the things you enjoy, especially if it's only as tame as face touching virtual men and women. And if someone does bug you or judge you, they're most likely assholes with no ability to look at themselves, their own behaviors and hobbies, and how they could potentially be embarrassing too.
Well said. But maybe I should be more specific.

I'm from the south. Even if you hang around the progressive spots like College Station, they still tend to read into things. And that tends to be the vocal minority that big corporations tend to listen to. I'm a Nerd and I really don't care what other people think of me, but it doesn't mean I'm not aware of the looks and stares I receive.
I could be trying to chill and wait for someone, or on the bus heading to who knows were. The person beside me will still gives the the odd looks for playing Pokemon, even if its not the amie stuff. God help me if I'm playing any import games. I just imagine the looks I'd get for touching top girl Syalla.

And that's why I wrote what I wrote. What's acceptable in Japan and what is acceptable in the US is night and day, with movements in video games hurting and/or right out stopping gaming content that reaches the west pissing off true fans of the medium. But in this case I see the fan rage misplaced, like with the rewording of a certain characters interactions with the protag.

I see it as Nintendo trying to get ahead of pissing off certain sections of the West who still see gaming as a thing for kids even though these are the same people that will buy GTA 5 then complain that its corrupting there kids.

Yeah it sucks for mature and progressive gamers, but with the level of stupidity in the US at the moment for every little stupid half gesture that could be perceived as an attack on anything that remains of the archaic status quo, NoA would be setting themselves up for failure if they left something like that in there. I just feel sorry for European fans because they just have to accept these heavy handed censorship.

I really REAALLY hope I'm wrong. If the loudest is gonna win the argument and scare gaming companies then this is the beginning of a new trend.

If you're going to feel sorry for us, feel sorry for us because of our lack of release date. Okay I'll shut up about that now.

Besides, localisation is always hit and miss with us. In Awakening, we couldn't have any talk about Tharja's boingy bits, but her bikini shot was included in all its glory.

Plus ever since the Mario Party 8 debacle, NOE has taken a much more proactive approach to localisation than it used to. It remains to be seen just how different Waifu-Amie will be from the NTSC release. Probably no different, but we'll see.

I found this on my Twitter timeline. I'm sure it's important to some people here on the forum who are still deciding if they want to buy Fates, so feel free to look at it.

The only change on that list that even mildly perturbs me is Effie's character change.

This ultimately changes nothing since I'm not exactly about to boycott the game on those grounds. Or any grounds for that matter. Still, she was who I'd intended to S-rank, so it's a bit of a bummer that she's now Literally Kjelle instead of her own character.

Well all I know is, my husbando is dreamy!

And seriously, all this controversy was why I was put off from this game for a long time until I saw gameplay footage and was reminded that I really really enjoyed Awakening and am likely gonna like these games as well.

...not to mention I do enjoy playing matchmaker, though I hear that's really hard to do for Conquest.

The point about class names is stupid and not researched. There is a reason why Pegasus Knight was changed to Sky Knight. Hoshido does not have pegsai. They have tenma. A support (one of Subaki's supports) says they are tenma. An eastern mythological equivalent to pegasi.

I'm sure I'll be concerned about this more once I finish Sacred Stones. And Path of Radiance. Right now, Fates is off my radar.

NoA's certainly made many questionable and unfortunate decisions in their handling of this game. Even tying into what Ant said, it seems like it'd make more sense to just call them Tenma Knights.

A few of those things have been present in previous Fire Emblem games like altering characterization, changing names, injecting humor, but people now are complaining about it? I'm sorry, but this gets under my skin. They seem to be doing this to push an agenda rather than being a fan of the series.
