![]() This thread is devoted to the Souls franchise published by From Software. Dubbed one of the most unforgiving game series of all time, I thought it deserved a thread (not the mention I love it to no end). Feel free to discuss to anything Souls related, from the music, the story (or lack thereof), funny/intense moments, or helpful pointers to get other people into this amazing franchise. The point of this thread is to make it so newcomers don't have to search the internet for videos and other things like that. This thread is a hub for all Souls related stuff. A quick synopsis of Souls series: Spoiler: click to toggle Also, I will link the video that all Dark Souls players know and love. That was not the video I thought it'd be. I felt certain it'd be this; (Mind your volume, the dude playing gets loud...) Spoiler: click to toggle And since I'm posting videos, I might as well post this gem too; from Load Our Last Souls over at Giant Bomb... Spoiler: click to toggle Dark Souls is definitely one of my favourite games of the last generation, for sure. Never did get around to the second though, I should pick that up at some point. It as good as the first? |

In some cases, yes. The mechanics are much smoother and everything feels more natural. It adds a lot more content in NG+ and NG++, such as items, enemies, and weapons. The combat is also more balanced if you are a PvP junkie, the summoning isn't as much of a pain in the ass, and there is more than one DLC (Three to be exact, all of which adding some really fun bosses and areas.) In some cases, no. If you were a diehard DKS1 fan then you will feel like some of the old things you knew and loved were left out, like the mysterious setting of Dark Souls 1. In DKS1, you walked around trying to figure out how things went to shit, with the story not being set in stone (I recommend Dark Souls Lore on Youtube, it adds some in depth theories on some of the characters.), while in DKSII things are laid out for you from the get-go. Bosses aren't as unique in Dark Souls II, and the areas aren't as cool either (there is no Ash Lake or Anor Londo equivalent, and most of the bosses are giant humanoids with a sword/axe/hammer.) Also, in my opinion, Dark Souls II is easier than Dark Souls I. Overall, DKSII is an amazing game by itself, but if you compare it to DKS1, then you can see some of its flaws. Note: All of this is my personal opinion. Edited by Karthulu, Feb 18 2015, 07:36 PM.

Well I started Dark Souls about a month ago, so much fun. Taking it easy at this point. Mainly taking breaks because of college, but holy shit it's a blast to play and I don't regret buying it at all for around $15 on PS3. Worth way more than that in my eyes. I just defeated [powered-up] Ornstein and Smough on a first try after a large break, now getting prepared for the 4 kings with soul grinding to get the stats required for the Greatsword of Artorias. It's really hard to grind as I think I overleveled (level 94), so it takes forever for someone to summon me for jolly cooperation against O n' S. If anyone can help me out in someway, even some tips, I'd be glad. Have a raw Zwei as well. Bloodborne is tempting me, it really is. It might be the PS4 system seller in my eyes. All of the DLC in Dark Souls 2 badly needed to be in the main game. The level design dropped off quickly after the Forest of Fallen Giants and the Lost Bastille, and without the exploration of all these ancient kingdoms the theme feels totally gutted. Also, in my opinion Dark Souls 2's setting was too lifeless and dead. There's no area that really grabbed me like Darkroot Forest or Anor Londo, and not enough characters had a true completion to their arcs. As for the plot, I really disliked how you're basically barked at to jump through hoops never even getting told why for a second, especially when you're apparently thought to be much better off than most hollows. The best parts of the game were honestly the ones that tried to link to Dark Souls 1 the least. Also, as a tip for TheWorst, do not use the Raw upgrade path. The boost it gives doesn't compare to the boost you'll get from basic stat scaling, especially as you upgrade your weapons. Also, don't level up Resistance; it's almost worthless as a stat. Hidetaka Miyazaki directed Dark Souls I Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura directed Dark Souls II. Hidetaka Miyazaki is directing Bloodborne. Hidetaka did an amazing job on Dark Souls I, so if he can repeat it with Bloodborne, the game will be legendary. Then again, it might be like Dark Souls II: amazing until compared with Dark Souls I. A bit too late for the Raw thing, it's powerful enough to last the game at this point in my eyes. The next time I play melee, because I'm certainly gonna play NG+, I'll go along the Chaos upgrade path instead. I leveled up a bit of Resistance, like maybe three or two times. It's fiiiiiiine. I have too much Strength, though. Also I guess i should mention I use Havel's Ring so I can actually roll around with my heavy armor, and Wolf's Ring because I heard from a friend that poise is a thing that's really really useful. @Karthulu I recognize that. And any game with a musket as a weapon? And it WORKS? And it looks BADASS? Plus the random generated area, all this other new stuff I don't want to spoil myself on? It's amazing. Bloodborne is great. |

That's... really disappointing, actually. I'm a big fan of the Dark Souls world, and it's lore. It's that that drew me in, actually; once I saw Anor Londo for the first time, I was hooked. (And I've seen those Lore videos on Youtube; they're really good!) So hearing that the world isn't as rich, that there aren't as many memorable areas, and that the bosses are blander? (Seriously, the bosses in DS were some of the most intense battles I've had in a game; they were amazing. ...well, except Bed of Chaos. Fuck that thing.) That's such a profound disappointment. I did still enjoy playing DS, so I'll probably look into the sequel at some point, but still. That's a real downer. Also, TheWorst; what platform are you on? 'Cos if you're on PC, I think I've got a character that's level... 120 or so? So I might be able to help out with some jolly co-operation at some point.

I will never understand some of the unrealistic expectations and elitism surrounding Dark Souls II. If you understand the history of From Software as a developer and the kinds of connecting threads and common themes they put in their games, Dark Souls II fits into that canon just fine. I consider Dark Souls II to be paying homage to past titles, such as King's Field and Demon's Souls. (Harvest Valley is especially reminiscent of King's Field world design) The whole "2manyhumanoid" has always smelled of lazy criticism to me as well. Should I write off Dark Souls 1 completely because Lost Izalith is a terrible area with the most terribly designed boss from any FromSoft game? I won't subscribe to that type of thinking and you shouldn't either. They attempted to do something both familiar and different with DSII, with all the success and failure that implies. Also, let's not act like Dark Souls is some unimpeachable piece of art hanging in a gallery, as much as many of us may enjoy it. |

Unfortunately I'm on the PS3 since my PC is a potato. I appreciate the offer though! Any other way to grind for souls efficiently? And something fun too... |

Speaking personally, my expectations for DS2 are high, but I don't think they're outright unrealistic. Places in Dark Souls like Anor Londo took my breath away, and bosses like (spoilers, 'cos I know TheWorst is still playing through) Spoiler: click to toggle had me on the edge of my seat. And for as sparse as the story was, I did find it engrossing. My biggest hope for DS2 is a little more of that same feeling, y'know? It seems that's where most of the criticisms lie though, so I'm a little wary. But if, when I inevitably get around to playing DS2, it gets anything close to the reactions the first did, I'll consider it a huge success. You have a point about the humanoid bosses though. For as interesting as the designs of bosses like the Gaping Dragon were, some of the bosses I had the most intense fights against were the humans; Spoiler: click to toggle So perhaps that criticism is a little unwarranted.@TheWorst, the most efficient way I found is in the Tomb of the Giants, just before you fight the boss there; there's an area with some mage enemies, and shallow water all around. Get rid of the mages, and then hang out in the water, and small skeletons will keep popping up to try and swarm you. They don't give a huge amount of souls (I think it's like a hundred each) but they're literally endless, and each dies in a single hit from a strong weapon. So it's a decent place to hang out there until you've got enough souls, or your patience runs out, whichever comes first. |

Lazy bosses does seem like a lazy argument, I just noticed a large majority of them in the game. I made a list, but this thread is supposed to get people to play the game, and not stray away from it. I'm sorry. You're going to have an amazing time playing through Dark Souls II, my view of the game has just been tainted because I've gone through it so many times, so I just see obstacles and annoying attacks other than really cool bosses. Even after all of my playthroughs, I still have a tough time fighting some bosses. There are a few that are close to Spoiler: click to toggle -TierSpoiler: click to toggle

Double posting, but if you are a PvP junkie like myself, then you will absolutely love DKS2 PvP. The OP weapons were nerfed so there is a tons of variety, and almost everything works if you know hitboxes and movesets. Iron Keep Bridge is an area found later in the game, but it makes for some really cool PvP moments. There are rocks jutting up out of lava, making for some Star Wars-esque fights. |

Another Dark Souls 2 advantage is that scaling is better so more weapons are viable, which means there's more variety for people like me who like to experiment with different builds. |

Also there are rare items called "Soul Vessels" which allow you to respec your character, making it easy to switch builds to prevent grinding other characters. |
