A lot of the stuff in that trailer looked... weird. What were those huge ass ships? Why do the Vaults look so different? And more importantly, WHY DOES THE PLAYER CHARACTER HAVE A VOICE?

I'll wait until E3 before really judging it, for now. Please don't fuck the lore up super hard, Bethesda.

Alright, dudes?
Can't really get excited over the trailer, you could have told me that was Fallout 3 and I would have believed you to be honest.

Guile did nothing wrong
It really does look like Fallout 3 with an ENB and some new animations

Large scale cities look cool, but I have doubts about them pulling it off on this shitty engine. I'm guessing that it'll be like The Strip/Freeside and be zoned to hell

I've been waiting for this...for 5 years
until this game is in my hand and I have played through it and didn't like it, nothing else matters to me
I'm staying hopeful
Bethseda hasn't let me down before and I know they won't here

I was like you once. Then Oblivion happened. The cartoony, theme park look of the FO4 wasteland reminds me of the transition to a cartoony Elder Scrolls with its 4th installment.

New Vegas was known for being very colorful compared to FO3 and many consider that one of if not the best game in the series.

One important aspect of art direction is trimming the fat and reining in excess. Morrowind was an immersive world for the time it came out backed up with just the things it needed, as opposed to throwing all the shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. It felt dangerous, unknown and took every opportunity to make you feel like an outsider. New Vegas also did this kind of thing with the Courier's relationship to his environment (Mojave, The Divide, etc.).

Bethesda never came close to that with Fallout 3 as I see it. Its comically blunt and obvious choices for art influence was more like a pale imitation of ideas from Fallout's backstory rather than finding a cohesive direction. Couple that with a sappy Hollywood Dad Drama story (the ending of which had to be fixed with DLC) and you have a very disappointing game compared to its predecessor Fallout 2.

Edit: I don't think the literally pastel green hills of Oblivion are comparable to New Vegas guys but maybe that's just me.

I actually liked the aesthetic for FO3, to me at least, it captured the feeling of post nuclear apoc pretty well.

The writing though...no arguments there. Here's hoping Bethesda hired some of the New Vegas team to handle that department.

3's writing was pretty average for anyone not named Three Dog (outside a few companions, Tunnel Snakes Rule!)

The best part of Fallout 3 is that it allowed New Vegas to happen.

Count me in on the "Not Hyped" train.

From a surface level point of view, it absolutely does. DC got rocked and for all the flaws I listed, seeing the DC metro for the first time was a good moment. But then you have to navigate it, with all of its walls of garbage railroading you into the ghoul tunnels where you essentially fight Ghoul MeatSims to get to where you want to go. Having this expansive, actually immersive environment and then forcing you into cookie-cutter procedurally generated subway dungeons to progress is the exact opposite of immersive.

Even New Vegas is guilty of this with the Honest Hearts DLC. The best use of the dungeons was in Lonesome Road, which actually had unique assets and memorable sequences of ascension in the environment.
