More sizzle than a rasher of bacon.
|
The main reason for the Pokemon music was to give off the tone that it's Gary's handiwork. That was driven up a notch with the canned cheers and boos for Gary and Vegeta respectively (apologies for the headaches some people got there, I don't have the greatest hearing myself so I didn't feel any sort of pain, didn't intend to hurt anyone). And we didn't play Price of Freedom since we used that at Blood Money. But we did play Redemption which I think worked well still. |

I really like the Summoners.
|
tbf the whole point of the show was to boost Gary's ego, so using all Pokemon music and it overriding the wrestlers in the matches kinda makes sense, since Gary thinks he's the most important thing on the show. EDIT: Oh, I didn't check the next page. This is what TOH said! Well, nice! Edited by Enoch, Apr 20 2016, 02:31 PM.

I think it would've been nice to have some character specific songs here and there. I understand why there was so much pokemon music, but I agree with Doom where the show's theme shouldn't be so much more emphasized over the participants in the matches. |

Not to dismiss reasonable concerns over the music selection (I stand by saying it was a good choice for the event, but that it is probably better as a one time thing) but I feel like it runs counter-intuitive to what we saw in Season 11, with huge support for the various Gameshark antics going on, and recall the Island show where we returned for more being hugely popular. I guess it's a case of there always being such a thing as too much of a good thing...or just a matter of personal taste. |

Transplanting this from Season 12 discussion's current... well, discussion, because this is a lot more feedbackey. Wall of text, so bear with me here. I think the most important thing is that we have a framing device that works out well. Don't forget that the universally praised Wrestlevania occurred at the cost of a months-long tournament being made moot for a character who had wrestled all of two times to rise into power. We can have an incredibly effective heel and a lot of possibilities, but we need to have proper build-up. For this season, we got at the end of Season 11 "the villains are gonna be Bison, Falcon, and Asura". No real pomp and circumstance when they started coming out, just an initial reaction at the end of a very long night that was filled with fantastic moments that this reveal frankly wouldn't top. We didn't really have a build, as it was kinda obvious that "Bison is gonna do something at the first PPV" before anything was even established. He did that, and then his plan going into the next PPV was "do another thing and get another member", which was, again, pretty telegraphed and something we'd seen a bit more effectively and heartbreakingly in Phoenix Wright's case in Wrestlevania. I think Shadaloo just needs better booking. They've been thrown up against main event talent and floundered. Say what you will about the Robot Masters, but they attacked characters from all over the card, and their earlier wins at the lower end gave them an aura of invincibility. I know we're at a point where everyone is much closer in ability and "anything can happen" really does feel like a thing, so it's more difficult to give more oppressive booking, but Shadaloo has almost solely been in matches they should statistically lose often, Asura's matches, and Flint Vs Bison, which was an unfortunate squash between two wrestlers who matched up well on paper. Personally, I don't see why Salvation Ops didn't fight Shadaloo at Mega Evolution instead of The Dragons. Dragons just got off of a very lengthy title reign with an aura of near invincibility to them; sending an untested and somewhat floundering team out that has Captain Falcon of all wrestlers on it just sounds like feeding them to a buzzsaw of a forgone conclusion. And it was, and then no plot happened to make Jimmy the Shadow Boss or anything. Hell, if you wanted the injured angle, you could've thrown out a team of Dr. Mario and Dan - victims both, one completely untested and the other being variable from a low midcarder to a low topcarder. Would've gotten a unique pop. I feel like the Flint Vs Bison match was incredibly unnecessary, especially with how it played out. The cutscene at the end made it very forgone that Flint's betrayal is brainwashing - Bison coming out to applaud him confirms it not being soul transfer, which basically took the only mystery of "what was that?!" out. The most important thing is to keep your audience guessing, and Shadaloo has been incredibly by-the-numbers aside from the Blood Money incident, which had a payoff of "a match that didn't actually amount to anything" and a weak framing for sending Flint up against Bison. Which could've easily, and more effectively, been done if there were just a line from the shadows at the end of the Flint & Barret plot scene, a simple "we'll see about that" on a black screen. The twist would be still fairly obvious, but it wouldn't be as completely telegraphed as it was, and shows Bison as a strong backstage presence as opposed to a weak in-ring one. Shadaloo just isn't that successful in getting heat. You want cheap ways for them to get heat? Asura should've fought DK, and then beat him up afterwards no matter what the result was. Hell, make that the curtain jerk, and after DK is injured, that's when Gameshark stuff starts happening, because the island's guardian is hurting. Have them start talking to Waluigi, making him an organic heel wanting power rather than his ability to get heat on his own being "oh that silly Wah". Whether Bison's purpose is to generate heat or not, he's doing a poor job of it - people are booing him, sure, but just for one event and not explaining his plans satisfactorily. Shadaloo just needs to leave SOME kind of mark on the show other than "we're a heel group and we can brainwash people" and "blood falcon is creepy". I think that proper booking and invading the other, very beloved plotlines involving King Vegeta and Oak's Authority or the Zangief/Mika duo would really work wonders for their ability to generate heat, and overall bring things full circle. As of right now, I'm not interested in seeing what Ezio or the Ops will do fighting Shadaloo, I'm not interested in seeing Dracula go "I'd love to help but I have title shit" or seeing Barret stalled from his retirement AGAIN to help his friend, mitigating the emotional impact his sendoff would have AGAIN, Hell, I'm more interested in seeing what Demoman wants to do with a briefcase and if Ganon's gonna feud with the pirates than I am seeing Flint be generic evilman grrrr I'm possessed or oh no I'm possessed Barret I'm sorry I can't control myself. I do think this angle still has some potential, but it's a bit of a mess right now and a lot of POTENTIALLY cool moves were done when safer and plot-controlled moves could've been done. Pacing is just... off this season, and that's a shame, because booking, arenas, and comedy have been SO GOOD this season. |

That Flint/Drac promo was the best promo all season, hands down. Tonight's plot in general addressed a lot of concerns and left me wanting to see a lot more. Absolutely fantastic work on the writing in every plot scene tonight, booking held up, everything was great that was within control. Absolutely loved it. |

Flint as a heel is starting to look very, very interesting. Yeah, he's being controlled, but it's clear the guy has been building up a lot of aggression over his time here. Ain't no more Mr Nice Guy anymore. |

The quality of plot and the show in general is so good that the true ramifications of VGCW being bi-weekly are only just now hitting me. TT |
