When I think of my favourite games, I always tend to forget Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory in my top 10. Which is unfair since it's, by far, my favourite MMO and when it comes to my tastes, I don't think any other multiplayer FPS will ever top it. I used to play it a lot, always coming back to it over the years, just because of the sheer amount of fun I've had on this game. And if the community was as alive as it was a few years ago, maybe I'd still play it. For those who don't know this game, it was supposed to be an extension of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, an FPS based on World War II with paranormal creatures. However it quickly became free, multiplayer only and more importantly, open source. Which means, completely customizable. There are hundreds of custom maps, a few gameplay mods, character outfits, custom guns... and the gameplay can go from "Allies must steal documents from the Axis and drive them safely to their base" to "Dunk yourself into a giant basketball net to score points" to "Axis soldiers must sacrifice themselves to summon the god of war". It plays a bit like Team Fortress 2. Instead of nine classes, you have five. It's also a lot more objective-based and in W:ET, customization is what made the game so great. Here's a brief description of the classes : 1) Soldier. This class has access to a lot of exclusive weapons: a bazooka, a flamethrower, a mortar and a bipod-mounted machinegun. It's closer to TF2's Heavy. 2) Medic. While this class can heal and poison foes, it can also be played "Rambo" Style: Keep all the medpacks to yourself, inject yourself with adrenaline, go nuts and kill everyone. 3) Engineer. My personal fave. this one can plant landmines, has access to a grenade launcher (and on some mods, a shotgun) but more importantly, they have dynamites, which is often the only way to destroy main objectives. They can also defuse dynamites to defend those objectives, when you play on the opposite team. 4) Field Ops. This is a support class that can give ammo to teammates and call in airstrikes, which are deadly and can kill several opponents in one attack. 5) Covert ops. This class can steal uniforms (and names) from the opposite team, making them useful as spies. They also have remotely triggered satchels that can destroy secondary structures, and access to snipers, silenced pistols and SMGs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The background part is done. The following part is more interesting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, I'm telling you all of this because school is coming back for me Wednesday. I haven't been in school since 2009, since my health prevented me from keeping up with the rhythm. And back when I was a student, I played a lot of Wolfenstein. I also wanted to go back to this game for months, so I figured I'd talk about it and propose something to the VGCW community. See, now that the game is aging, most good servers are long gone. But unlike a few years ago, I'm making money. Which means that I could easily pay for my own server, if I wanted to. I've hosted one before, a free server on my own crappy connection, so I know the basics of how to set them up. But this time, I want to make a good one, that everyone could join... and more importantly, I'd like it to be VGCW-themed. If you've read the part above or know about W:ET already, you know that this is Allies vs Axis. But we could make it Faces vs Heels if we wanted to! Character skins are also easily replacable. We could have Snake as the Covert Ops, Demoman as the Field Ops, Duke as the soldier... Document objectives could become So... What do you think? If the community is interested, I'd pay ~25 bucks a month for a 30-slot server, and slowly add submissions from the community to make it more VGCW-themed, and you guys could play a really fun FPS with fellow real fake wres fans, for free. useful links! Let's revive this shit. Edited by Blauze, Aug 31 2015, 02:03 AM.

How do you make maps in this game and can there be a map of the VGCW Arena (probably classic since the Season 10 ARENA is all outside and probably too difficult to replicate) |

With a software called GTKRadiant. And you can make a map about everything. Mapping in FPS games is pretty complex though; I've never really been invested in it, but I tried as a kid and never really achieved anything. But if you wanna try making a VGCW map I'll do my best to help! Also, I just tried playing on my windows 8 PC, everything works perfectly fine. I'll help you if it derps on your end. |

It's alright! I don't expect everyone to contribute. By the way, before I go ahead and spend money on that project, I'd like to make sure people who are interested actually enjoy the game. We should try to find a random server online and play with each other! We could try organizing something via forum PMs or on Skype (my name should be on my profile under MSN), or if I find a good stable server I'll post it here, and we could just gather there to play a bit before I go ahead and make the thing. The whole conversion into a full-fledged VGCW server will be done after I set everything up for a "normal" server, and could take weeks or months depending on who's contributing, but if the project starts, then it will most likely end. With everything done I mean. |
