More sizzle than a rasher of bacon.
WARNING: This series is known for many spoiler moments that occur, please be careful when discussing or reading the thread so you don't spoil others or get spoiled yourself!

Surprised I didn't see a thread for this, so here we go! For those not familiar with Danganronpa, it's a series featuring high school students stuck in a school setting, and the only escape is to murder a classmate and get away with it by not having their misdeed exposed in a class trial that follows. At the head of it all is a mysterious bear named Monokuma, who does all he can to drive the students into despair. The eternal battle of hope and despair is a prominent theme in the series, and it's known for its unique style (pink blood, for instance), deep cast of characters, and twists everywhere.

Currently there's three games in the series. Danganronpa and Danganronpa 2 are visual novels that were originally on the PSP in Japan only, then they got Vita ports which received official English releases. There's also been a side game on the Vita, Danganronpa: Another Episode - Ultra Despair Girls, which just came out this month in English, which takes place between the first two games and takes a much different approach in gameplay than the VNs, as it is a third-person shooter/beat-em-up but still has plenty of story to it like the other games. A third mainline title was announced recently at TGS for the PS4 and Vita.

----------

That out of the way, I made this thread as I recently finished up Ultra Despair Girls. I know Choco's also finished it, but I was wondering if anyone else has given it a look? Again, be careful about spoilers, please spoiler tag appropriately and mark where the spoilers are from if you can (DR:AE Chapter 4, for example).

I always toyed with the idea of starting up a Danganronpa thread glad to finally see one.

I remember picking up the first game about a year ago and falling in love with the setting and the story of the franchise. If you're a fan of visual novels and own a Vita I highly recommend giving the first game a try, pick up the second if you enjoyed the first one but only get Ultra Despair girls if you're really want to get into the knowing more about the world and the stories within it.

As for spoilers, just try and be, gentle.

DR:AE Chapter 3

My interest died when my Vita along with my copies of DR and DR2 were stolen. Much of what I know about Ultra Despair Girls was what I found out back when the game was first released. Still want to see it somewhat to see Toko and her devolopment.

Playing through Despair Girls right now. Gameplay could be a bit better, but I'm enjoying the story quite a bit. Komaru and the Warriors of Hope are great.

Ill be honest after finishing Ultra Despair Girls, Komaru is hands down my favourite protagonist out of the 3 games while I feel Hajime was the weakest of the 3.

My experience with Dangan Ronpa lies with the original Let's Play done by orenronen before any translation plans were made. Some fun, crazy times with that one. Think I'll get around to them proper when I get a Vita.

Bad game carried entirely by Monaca being one of the best characters in the whole damn series.

Like seriously Chapter 4 in USD is just offensively bad gameplay-wise.

I wouldn't say UDG is a bad game, I enjoyed it, however I moved to using my PSTV around chapter 2 or 3, as playing the game on a dual shock 4 helps a lot.

The game really should have been more of the challenge rooms, as trying to complete the objectives for the rooms was always a lot of fun. I would be down for a full on puzzle game with them.

I'd like it more if the Monokumas weren't terrible enemies. Their AI is seven flavors of wonky and hit detection is spotty at best. Their animations to make them more goofy end up making them non-threatening, as you can pretty much backpedal infinitely, get them in their like three second attack animation, and then move slightly to the left to avoid. The game is offensively linear to a point of railroading that Final Fantasy XIII would blush at, and unlike Hallways The Movie, when it does eventually open up (the aforementioned Chapter 4), it lacks direction and ends up being just a boring, plodding area that ends up going on WAY too long and wasting the player's time. And the fact that every boss except the final one can be stunlocked SUPER easily - like just playing the boss as it's meant to be played - is just exceptionally sad.

I mean, I'm not gonna say I don't like it. Toko goes above and beyond being both the mentor character and herself, Komaeda fills his quota of 'being komaeda', Nagisa is surprisingly good, and other than going 'I CAN'T DO ANYTHING I'M NORMAL TOKO WHAT DO I DO', Komaru is a surprisingly solid protag, probably a lot better than her brother. And of course, Monaca is a fucking despair angel precious baby. Those, plus the bonus light novel, Matthew Mercer's voice acting carrying a nothing character, Kurokuma's lines in general, and Fukawa's rants on various forms of literature really make it solid writing-wise (despite the series' tendency to restate things, like, three times even when it shouldn't need to). But there are things I actually found offensively bad in there (mostly Chapter 4's gameplay and Chapter 3's Genocide Jack sequence - God that could've been done so well and they botched it so :disgusting: ly) and it's definitely a 'can only recommend if you REALLY love the series' kind of game, as opposed to a good game in its own right like the first two games are.

Can't wait for DR3 though. It's always just so much fun latching to an early favorite or two and then seeing them die, can't wait to latch to another initial impression and have it let me down in the 'staying alive' department.

-nerd voice activated- Actually Kaiji Tang provides the voice of Hagakure instead of Mercer. (If the mode is voiced by him)

My current thoughts

Seriously though I'm glad v3 is its own thing and not tied up with the hope peak arc, wee it seems that way for now.

I do find the lighting in the thumbnail of the v3 trailer interesting though, as it make her hair colour resemble a certain someone from a previous game instead of the black it is.

Spoiler: click to toggle

God I would have preferred a SoL about DR1's school days much more. They're more interesting characters arrayed, and especially considering Junko and Mukuro were in that class.
