The Zelda title we weren't particularly expecting at E3 this year lands in less than a month. Today, Nintendo dropped a trailer on its social media, so I thought now might be as good a time as any to prompt discussion on here.

From what I've seen from the trailer, I'm not quite sure how to feel. On the one hand, the game looks like a blend of Four Swords Adventures (which I like), Phantom Hourglass (which was pretty good), and A Link Between Worlds (which is chuffing excellent). There seem to be some interesting new items such as fireball mitts and a Water Rod, as well as returning items such as the Gust Jar from The Minish Cap. And finally, at long last, online co-op multiplayer, as well as download play in close range. Four Swords GBA suffered from the need for all players to own a GBA, a copy of A Link to the Past, and up to three link cables, Four Swords Adventures slightly improved on this by only demanding a GBA and a GCN-CBA link cable each, and Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks only offered multiplayer competition, though Phantom Hourglass did have Wi-Fi compatibility.

On the other hand, some of the costumes look... daft. From what little plot can be deduced from the trailer, it doesn't look like it'll have the same depth as most other entries in the series. And lastly, the music, which is usually a strong point of Zelda games, sounds a bit naff by comparison in the trailer.

Overall, I'm not expecting anything spectacular from the game, but I don't particularly mind since the 3DS already has one fantastic original Zelda game and two very worthy remakes. Still, I hope I'll be proven pleasantly wrong.

Thoughts?

It's a Zelda game so I'm gonna play it. Might need to bring friends, though.

On the OTHER hand, some of the costumes look amazing,

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm pretty interested in this game. The focus on cooperation over competition makes this a lot more appealing compared to the Four Swords games.

I can't wait for this game and I love that I can play with my friends online. The costumes are silly and fun and I like them. Can't wait for the game.

I would be more enthusatic if the online of my college actually allowed me to play online games. I'm gonna try out a rental store and see if I can actually get online first but if not, it's likely going right on the Christmas list.

Considering that I only play A Link Between Worlds for the Streetpass Shadow Link PVP, I am looking forward to the online battles, at the very least. And the glorious costumes.

Late update: Nintendo dropped a more comprehensive trailer a couple of days ago. The key points to take away from it are, in no particular order:

  • The damsel du jour is not Zelda, but Styla. Rather than being kidnapped, turned to stone, trapped in a painting, becoming a ghost, or passing herself off as a ninja/pirate, a pair of sunglasses stole all of her dresses. Other than that, she seems fine.
  • Wi-Fi connection can be done with randomers. No need to call your friends!
  • Totem Time seems to be the main puzzle-solving solution in this game. Think of it as TFH's answer to ALBW's brilliant wall merging.
  • As with Four Swords Adventures, there is a Vs. Mode. However, it has online capability this time around, and materials are your reward instead of just bragging rights. These materials, which are also found at the end of each level, go towards crafting your power-up costumes.
  • There are 32 stages; a huge increase on FS GBA's 5 and FSA's 24. No word on whether they're linear or not.
  • Probably not linear, since items look as though they're temporary and limited to the stage they're found in. (Snake voice: "OSP, huh?") With no point in retaining and re-using items, the stages could probably be tackled in any order.
  • There is a hub world, which features a shop where you can go and craft your costumes.
  • The dopples in single player are eerie as all hell.
  • There's a puzzle involving something that bears a striking resemblance to Vaati's eye, but I'd be pretty surprised if he were to make an appearance.

I'm still not fully enthused about the premise of the game, but it looks fun enough for me to buy it within the first few days of its release.

Even though it's likely just for the trailer hearing proper voice acting in a Zelda game feels weird man.

They started doing voiced narration in Hyrule Warriors. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I don't particularly hate it. Hopefully this doesn't lead to full voice acting somewhere down the line.

I'd be okay with voice work. As long as Link remains relatively quiet, I don't mind.

Honestly voiced narration is cool as fuck. If Link doesn't speak then who the fuck cares who else talks. I also will be getting this game so whoever wants to jump in too I'm down.

Yeah, but the narrator in Hyrule Warriors sounds more like she should be voicing a shampoo commercial rather than a video game.

I doubt Styla will have any spoken lines in the game. For that matter, I don't think the Zelda series as a whole is ever going to have more voice acting beyond the norm Ocarina of Time established (i.e. grunts and yells, with the odd "Hey! Listen!"). Hyrule Warriors gets a free pass due to not being part of the main series, and I didn't mind the narration in that game anyway.

I've left my 3DS Friend Code in my user profile if anyone wants to add me and team up or shove a sword in my face once the game comes out.

Nintendo of America tweeted this. I'd recomend everyone ask 6 or else the fanbase will never know it's most important question.

Though 5 is the true question.

If I had to make a wild stab in the dark, I'd say TFH takes place centuries after Spirit Tracks in the Adult Timeline, but I don't know. Toon Link art style, and the possibility that Hytopia isn't the same Hyrule from most games.

Then again, it could take place in any future, be it centuries after Four Swords Adventures in the Child Timeline (again, plausible due to Toon Link art style), or centuries after The Adventure of Link in the Decline Timeline (elements from ALttP and ALBW running wild in the game).

But yes, "Where's Purple?" is the true question.
