Kefka and Zangief both have some of the quieter themes in the league, but in the end I think Kefka has the better song overall. The iconic laugh hits hard and grabs attention, and the song itself feels like it captures Kefka's personality more than Zangief's does. Kefka is pompous and can be goofy, but he can also be a terrifying cold-hearted monster as well. I did like when he used to have a bit more spring to his step in his intro, but his loss at EG5 and being made an interviewer can explain why that stopped. Kefka gets my vote.

Man, picking between Dracula and Bowser's themes is tough. Drac has one of the best soundbytes in the league and it perfectly flows into the song and his appearance. The theme itself hits hard with tons of ominous presence and maintains that chilling pressure across all the different parts of the song. Bowser's theme is a great from the N64 era and I personally think it's the best boss/character theme Bowser has ever had. It also has enough of a beat to dance to, which makes Bowser grooving to his own theme all the sweeter; it's in-character and feasible. That said, I think "Dance of Illusions" narrowly beats out the 64 Bowser theme both as a song and for telling you that something big is about to happen. Looking at just the songs themselves, Drac's theme generates more hype and terror than Bowser's does. Count Dracula gets my vote.

Kefka and Bowser.

Kefka's theme is dripping with the clown's jovial, yet sinister personally. Zangief's theme is just dripping shits.

Bowser's also really fits the King's personality and while Dracula may have a better song, I don't think it does that quite as well.

Remember last year when we were excited for this?
I'm worried the Kefka/Bowser matchup is something of a popularity contest. I was thinking of just voting Gief because I felt like his theme would fit a bit better, but then I went back and listened to Kefka's theme again... Yeah, it's just better. It's not even about being tired of Gief, it's just Kefka's theme is full of pure mischief. And Gief's theme still just feels flat. Either way though, the winner's got a tough challenge ahead of them next round.

Speaking of which... We've got us a battle of two "Oh shit" moments. Albeit nowadays those are going to be a tiny bit lessened. Bowser's a bit less of a threat than he once was, and as champion Drac's matches should be announced ahead of time. Drac's theme just feels like the more complete package. It's just a hands down better song.

Ahh, nothing beats the music of thousands of Gief fans screaming in unison. Kefka's got my vote. As far as un-remixed SNES themes go, Kefka's has a lot more character than Zangief's. He also has the bwoop.

As for the other one... this is tough. Drac's got the full set of tools his with the SotN voice clip and an energetic arrangement of his Rondo of Blood battle music, while Bowser keeps it simple yet effective, and has me tapping along to the beat every time.

It pains me to shun the King of Awesome like this, but... Kefka and Dracula. Bowser might have clinched this if he had a voice clip. I mean, "SHOWTIIIIME" only comes out for special occasions, whereas Drac's got a consistent sound byte.

Kefka stops the curtainjerk power of Zangief dead in its tracks 27-5. Meanwhile, Dracula defeated Bowser in a slightly closer 22-10.

Next up:

Senator Steven Armstrong
"The unenlightened masses, they cannot make the judgement call!"
Round 1 Results: N/A

vs

Travis Touchdown
"Travis, it's kill or be killed!"
Round 1 Results: Beat Ezio Auditore 25-8

Armstrong makes his debut here in the second round. Will Travis fuck with this senator?

Match 2:

Dr. Ivo Robotnik
"NO! NO! NO! NO!"
Round 1 Results: N/A

vs

Sho Minamimoto
"Open up your eyes! Transformation!"
Round 1 Results: Beat Guile 22-8

Does Robotnik still have the master plan after his TRANSFORMATION? Can VGCW's newest superstar gain another big win here?

Hrm...the first match up is hard for me, with the MUHCAWS factor going. That said, if I had to choose, I'll choose Armstrong. His theme just has that immediate 'oh shit' build right at the beginning with the booming wall of sound. Sorry, Travis.

The second match is pretty easy. Robotnik's theme is funny, but it's not a very good song or theme. It's an obvious leitmotif more than a theme. Sho's is a better song and theme all over, with the intro build that everyone's pretty familiar with at this ponit.
