More sizzle than a rasher of bacon.

![]() So recently Game Freak came out with Pocket Card Jockey on the 3DS, an oddball combination of horse racing using solitaire to help your horse's performance. It's only on the eShop, but I gave the demo a try because I'm into these quirky game ideas. My verdict? This game is way better than it has any right to be. There's admittingly a lot to learn about how this game works, but that's a credit to its surprising depth. Between horse stats, mood, building energy, skills, getting your horse in the right lane position, and just plain being good at solitaire, there's so much that determines how well you perform in races. You're not going to start with a horse and just win every race. Instead it's a slow build. You win a few races for the horse's career, growing stats, entering more races when it matures, then send it to the farm for breeding the next, better generation. Slowly but surely you find better horses to win more races to take on those stronger horses in the bigger races. There's also some sharing aspects to it. Once your horse is retired, you can generate a QR code and make that horse available for others to use for own breeding purposes, or scan horses other players have codes for and make your own potential winner. It keeps things difficult enough to leave you wanting to get a champion that can finally sweep all the races without completely destroying you or letting you win easily. Plus the game has a killer soundtrack by Go Ichinose, known for his work on the Pokemon series (he skipped Pokemon X and Y to work on this game). If any of this seems up your alley, give the eShop demo a whirl. It goes into all the mechanics and gets you into plenty of races so you can figure out if you're interested in more, plus you can transfer the save data to the full game if you're up for the dive. Anyone else been playing this lately? Feel free to drop some QR codes in here if you have! I'll upload a few when I get a chance. |
