Well, we've been all around the world, and what a journey it's been. We've found some new friends, sent off some old veterans, and watched the magic that is 2k14 murder the credibility of most of the show's heels. Mister TOH's Wild Ride has only just begun and I'm eager to see where this is going. So I'm back to actually finish a whole thread for once. Buuut there's a slight kink. The Power Rankings seem to be dead, so I'm just going to do this in alphabetical order. Helps space out talking about the winners and the losers. Spoiler: click to toggle And keeps me from talking about Zangief until I remember how to pretend to be objective about him.
The list of the order is below. Tell me if I missed anyone.
the list of wres Adam Jensen Air Man Albert Wily Asura Barret Wallace Billy Lee Bowser Break Man Captain Falcon Chief Arino Dan Hibiki Dante Demoman Dracula Duke Nukem Earl Ebisumaru Ezio Auditore Flint Ganondorf Gary Oak Goemon Groose Guile Guybrush Threepwood Heavy Weapons Guy Illidan Stormrage Ivo Robotnik Jimmy Lee Johnny Cage Kanji Tatsumi Kefka King Vegeta Knuckles the Echidna M. Bison Mike Haggar Miles Edgeworth Nappa Octodad Phoenix Wright Professor Layton Raiden Raijin Red Reyn Ridley Sabin Rene Figaro Scorpion Seifer Almasy Sho Minamimoto Solid Snake Sonic the Hedgehog Steven Armstrong Toad Toejam Travis Touchdown Waluigi Vyse Zangief Zubaz
Adam Jensen Matches: Lost to Red, Lost to FF3&K (Tables Match), Beat Nappa, Beat Fuckheads, No Contest with Team Hell Yeah Plot: Was concerned, yet did almost nothing to stop Shadaloo. Captured a Blood Falcon and helped Ezio free Falcon.
For being a primary force in the fight against Shadaloo, Jensen really has not done much of note this season. Salvation Ops has not really worked out for Jensen, as him and Snake just do not seem to make a compelling team. They're both super serious agents, and as a result they don't play off each other nearly as well. The mixing of Ezio and Travis into the mix hasn't done much to really fix this, as Snake's gotten more focus. Unfortunately for the augmented one, after 6 seasons of being Gabe's little buddy, Jensen's been kinda stuck as Snake's partner instead of being able to forge a career on his own. And lord knows, Snake casts a long shadow that it's hard to get out from under.
That's not to say that there is no hope left for him as a singles wrestler. His match with Red was down to the wire, and then he did score a huge singles win this season against motherfucking NAPPA. Jensen beat Nappa in what was supposed to be a squash match and no one acknowledged it. Hell, Nappa even cut a promo about how he wins all the time in the literal next plot segment. That should be a win that catapults someone's career. Instead the Shadaloo plot overshadowed it and Jensen was left by the wayside. He needs to break out of Snake's shadow and show us the man who took out Bowser and Nappa next season, as he's fast losing support.
Singles: Up Tags: Neutral
Air Man Matches: Lost to Fisherman's Horizon (Ladders), beat King Vegeta, beat TJ&E, beat Heavy, beat the Fuckheads, beat Sonic Truffle (#1 contender's), beat Shadow Ball Valley for the tag titles Plot: Laid low with Break Man until they became #1 Contenders. Sensed something wrong with Red in plot scenes.
Can anyone defeat Air Man? The answer is fast looking like no. He's won all but one match he was involved in this season, whether it be singles or tags, and the top card should be thankful that he won the tag titles, because it means the triple crown is safe. For now. He's clearly shaken off his loss to Dracula last season, and for me, it's not a question of if this genocidal robot will be VGCW Champion, it's WHEN. He took down King Vegeta (who is on the fast track to a title shot) with a manager disadvantage, he took out the Heavy fairly handily, and has terrorized the tag division, winning 4 tag matches in a row with Break Man to capture the titles with relative ease.
Air Man may be the strongest wrestler on the roster right now, and I think I'd favor him in matches against Ganon or Nappa. I don't expect the Mavericks to be dropping their hard earned gold any time soon, because after all... Air Man Ga Taosenai.
Singles: Up Tags: Up
Doctor Albert Wily Matches: Beat Arino, Beat Layton (#1 Contenders), beat Heavy (Casual Championship), beat Sonic Truffle, Beat Waluigi (Title defense), lost to Deadly Alliance (Tables), lost to Guybrush and Phoenix (with Dracula), beat Guybrush (Title Defense) Plot: Casual title shittalk, dealing with Robotnik stealing his title.
Speaking of unholy terrors, we have the man who turns the wheels, the mechanist with a PHD in swag, and the guy who will light your car on fire, steal your girlfriend, and lucha your ass across the ring, Doctor Wily. Doctor Wily is easily the most improved wrestler of the TOH era, going from a laughingstock known for dying in a single finisher to perhaps, the scariest casual champion we've seen since Air Man held the belt, and if his reign of terror keeps this up, we may be looking at Red levels of dominance over the division.
Let's take a look at Wily's singles career this season. First, he put on a fairly competitive match with Arino, where he shocked the world by taking Arino down 2-0, once with a roll-up, and then a Moon Orbit Drive to seal the deal. Then he shocked the world again against Layton, kicking out of a second Brainbuster to close out a really good match and get himself a PPV Match for the title. That was the point where Wily found his swag outfit from the Island and proceeded to give no fucks about things like "giving your opponent a chance." At no point in Wily's reign has it really looked like his opponents have had a shot at beating him. The Heavy got utterly bodied without even letting him get a Sig off. He toyed with Waluigi until he hit the Lousy Elbow, and then Wily proceeded to smash him into a fine paste, despite botching his own comeback. Guybrush? The pirate got his comeback off, and then it was clear he shouldn't have even been in the same ring as Wily.
The tag division is the only thing reminding us that Wily is in fact, mortal, as with his new record of single's dominance, his tag performance has slipped, as he has only one won tag match in the TOH era. Perhaps him and his still Gameshark-affected partner just aren't on the same page, as Ivo's jealousy over Wily's title reign continues to grow. But when your losses include going toe to toe with Scorpion for several minutes, and getting pinned by the current VGCW Champion, it's hard to hold that against him. But it doesn't seem to matter, as it's going to take one hell of a man to stop Wily's reign of terror, and that savior has yet to be seen. And if they're found, it's up in the air whether the mad luchadore will just make them a martyr, a statue to raise.

That's all for the As, the Bs in a day or two.

Did Jenson really beat Bowser and Nappa this season? I had completely forgotten that. This season really didn't make him or Snake look very good at their jobs huh? For all their talk about being VGCW's salvation, they really haven't done much saving at all. Travis did more to stop Shadoloo than them, and that was by trying to murder Falcon in cold blood! Not to mention at End Game where it took them like, 30 minutes to get from the basement to the ring where Ezio and Falcon had already defeated Bison.
Not really much to say about Air Man other than he's just downright scary now. It'll be interesting to see if anyone will be able to stand up to him next season.
Wily's run with the belt has been amazing. The guy has been around since near the beginning of the show, so it's nice to see the doctor of swag finally get his chance in the spotlight, may his title run be long and contain lots and lots of flips!
I wonder if there's any story potential right now based on the fact that both Wily and the Mavericks hold gold now?
EDIT: Oh yeah, and it looks like you forgot to do a write up for Asura, though I'm not sure if there's much to say. He started off strong with a win over Groose and in that six man tag, then he got hit with the Shadoloo curse and lost to the Dragons and Zangief. Plotwise he didn't really do much other than be Bison's shouty henchman. He was kind of the forgotten member of the team really.

Moogle: I know, the momentum rankings are a quality service, but I want to space out the winners and losers to vary things a bit. I dunno. (Plus I wanted an excuse to not deal with the Shadaloo mess by stalling M. Bison's write-up as long as possible.)
Oh yeah, I guess I did forget Asura. May as well write him up to finish the As.
Asura Matches: Beat Groose (Tables), Beat Team Dads (3v3), Lost to the Dragons, lost to Zangief. Plot: Murdered Zubaz, Acted as Bison's minion in Shadaloo, ditched Bison with Flint to join the Patriots
Sometimes, the game works wonders. Sometimes the game just refuses to play ball. And then there's what it did to Shadaloo. I'll have a looooong write-up on the mess with the overarching Shadaloo plot when we get to M. Bison, but for now, let's just talk about Asura's role as Bison's angry enforcer.
And you know, at first, things worked well. Asura came out of nowhere by interrupting the Blood Falcon/Zubaz promo in Mute City to lay the local hobo Star Road 2 winner out cold. He then followed it up with a brutal tables match in which Groose ended up getting utterly pummeled, smashed through a table, and then got a further post-match beatdown to sell just how terrifying the incarnation of rage is. Meanwhile, backstage, you could tell something was clearly wrong with Asura in his talks with Bison. And of all of Bison's stable, the game seemed to be cooperating with Asura, as he looked like a beast in the 3 on 3 match against Barret, Flint, and Dracula, and even managed to carry Blood Falcon's worthless ass out of getting squashed against the Dragons.
That's about the point where the game decided to strangle TOH's plot, as Asura would eat a loss to Zangief. Now, we all know I have issues with Gief, but it's objective fact that outside his miraculous iron curtain streak, Gief is... inconsistent at best, and I think Asura beats him most of the time. But with the curse of Shadaloo looming over him, Asura botched his comeback and got taken down. Honestly, not the most embarrassing loss in the world, and Asura can easily bounce back from it. However, it's still not the best thing for his monster reputation to lose so early in his career. To quote the great King, i dunno lol.
After that, Asura just kinda disappeared until the very end of the season, where freed from Bison's control, he told Bison to screw off and left with Flint. Now, we know they're part of the Sons of the Patriots, and seem to have become friends with each other. Asura will have a ways to go to shake off the stench of Shadaloo, but a tag team with fellow angry dad Flint isn't the worst place to go from here.

There are worse ideas in the world than putting Angry Dad Asura and Violent Dad Flint in a tag team together. A couple of powerhouses like them could put a dent in just about anyone, the same way Dadvalanche could. That said, it's a shame the game didn't want to build Asura up. Or Flint, for that matter.

Wily's story this season is like if WWE had given Zack Ryder a proper run with the IC Title when he won it at Wrestlemania this year. I love it.

Yeah I fully agree with this on Wily, he is looking as good as Red did during his Casual reign, hell he might even be the one to finally break Red's title defense record which has withstood the likes of Segata and Air Man.

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet. Wily only has 2 defenses so far and again Dracula went into his match against Phoenix with 2 defenses and Dracula was thought of as unstoppable.

People didn't think of Dracula as unstoppable. Air Man was really close, both the Barret matches were close. They just thought Phoenix would get murdered by him (which was a silly thing to think in hindsight). Dracula's matches were pretty back and forth, Wily just doesn't let his challengers do anything.

If Wily makes it to just five defenses, we can make comparisons to prior champs and think he's unstoppable. I love the guy and want his reign to keep going so let's not put a jinx over him before he's crossed the defense threshold.

Now for some controversy
Barret Wallace Matches: Beat the Fuckheads, No Contest with Dracula (VGCW Title VS Career), Lost to Shadaloo, Lost to Dracula (VGCW Title VS Career) Plot: Achieve or Leave, Feud with Shadaloo
You all know his nickname. Small Match Barret. Pointless match to help a midcarder out? Here comes small match Barret to squash them. Oh look, he got a title shot! Time to choke horribly. There's a point where a joke stops being funny and it just starts getting sad. For Barret, it was somewhere around season 11 where the Gameshark added stakes to a match and Barret just got murdered by Nappa.
So really, if he got another shot, it had to be his last one. And, give Barret credit, he didn't give up easily. He cut two damn good promos, got the VGCW universe behind him instead of laughing it off as "time for Barret to choke again." He stepped into Dracula's castle, gave everything he had to take on the champ.. and just when he thought it was over... Bison happened.
I will have a lot to say about this when I get to Bison, but god damn, that run-in ended up not panning out in the end. There will always be that cloud of "could Barret have really done it?" And of course.. it ended up tying up the title scene for the inevitable rematch. Barret did it. He finally pinned the champion... and it didn't matter. He put everything into taking on Dracula... and just as he finally could take the lead in the iron man match... it wasn't enough. Dracula kicked out. Once more, Barret came up short. And this time, there was no further to go. Flint came out to wish his friend goodbye... and put him down with a power smash.
And so it ended for Barret. Laid out by his best friend, failing once more to conquer his demons. In the end, he was never quite good enough to hold the gold, and never bad enough to keep out of the title scene. It was a vicious cycle that was just doing damage to the mid and top card, let alone Barret's own stock. If only it had ended sooner.
Final Barret Wallace Choke Counter Casual Contender's: 3 Casual Title Matches: 3 Co-Op Title Matches: 1 VGCW Contender's: 2 VGCW Title Matches: 3 Money in the Bank: 1 Special Plot Main Events: 3
Trending: Flatlined
Billy Lee Matches: Beat Deadly Alliance (Co-op Title), Beat Dashing Rouges (Co-op Title), Lost to SBV (Co-op Title), Beat Raijin and Waluigi (Tables) Plot: THE GAUNTLET, Revengeance against Shadaloo, Graduated from the Saikyo School
I guess this is where I have to talk about the Dragons' title reign now, as this will make up most of the focus of the write-up. The Dragons are one of the greatest tag teams of all time now, if not the greatest. (For my money, I think that honor goes to Gamecenter FU.) They had one of the longest and greatest tag title reigns of all time... and lord did those matches suck. A combination of their title reign coming at the end of their heavy plot focus and the other team's AI utterly shitting out in every single one of their matches just lead to utter fatigue. (Not to mention their frankly absurd abilities to reverse finishers.)
So the gauntlet came. Deadly Alliance? Johnny got a concussion early and Scorpion couldn't win the 2v1. Dashing Rogues? Guybrush got drunk. And then came Blood Money. Out came Shadow Ball Valley for round 3 of the Gauntlet... and lo and behold, Red and Illidan didn't shit out. We had ourselves the kind of match that I wish the Dragons had in all their title defenses. Back and forth, blow for blow, and a fantastic match overall. Finally, the Dragons put someone over. But the new champs didn't have long to celebrate before Shadaloo showed up. The Dragons were down, their master put on the shelf, and they wanted revenge.
At Mega Evolution, they smashed Blood Falcon into a fine paste and dodged around Asura's wrath to pick up the win. And just like that, there was nothing left to prove. They made their master proud. They graduated from the Saikyo school. The Dragons finally left the tag scene and started the road to prove themselves as individuals.
I think of the Brothers Lee, Billy's going to be the one to watch. He's the one who actually won a singles match in the Bullies/PRATS feud, his table match was fantastic, and it was capped with getting the double kill at the end. I could see him fast rising through the midcard.
...And please for the love of god, keep them out of the tag division for a while.

While I really liked Barret and his consistent position in the title despite never winning it (yes, seriously, I like having someone in the rankings who can be a consistent threat and yet always have a bit further to go, it's even part of his song!) I agree with the analysis of his season - both the ups and downs. I really wish he'd gotten a better send off, but I wouldn't want to drag him back just because of that, and I think that what was done was the best that could be done for him.
