I watched a let's play of Metroid Fusion awhile ago and I want to play a game similar to it. Aren't the Castlevania games similar to them? Where should I jump into either series? What are some other series that are similar? |

There's a name for it's genre it's called Metroidvania, just a quick google search should give you a good start. If you want a Metroid game go for Super Metroid of course. As for Castlevania I'd say Super Castlevania but it doesn't have the Metroidvania gameplay, yet it's fun has hell. Symphony of Darkness is what you'd probably want. |

Symphony of the Night. Try Metroid: Zero Mission, it's a GBA remake of NES Metroid but less confusing and tedious. Castlevania Aria of Sorrow on GBA is also a good Metroidvania game, and Order of Ecclesia on DS. On PC there's also Cave Story, which is not only a great Metroidvania but maybe the best freeware game ever made. Edited by Happyman, Jun 15 2013, 09:14 AM.

Been under a rock since S4

If you have a 360 kicking around, you'll love Shadow Complex on the XBLA. I also really like Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, but it's not as polished as Aria or the DS games so it might not be for you. |

UnEpic is available for $8 on steam for pre-purchase right now. It seems to be a pretty quirkly nice little MetroidVania game. |

One game might be worth a shot if you're into old school dickery and puzzles, and that game is La Mulana, which just got released on Steam. It's very similar in controls to a Castlevania game, right down to delay in attacks with the whip, and the puzzles are very well done, making you feel good with worthwhile powerups as you explore the ruins. It's probably my favorite game in a good while. |

Also I started playing Super Metroid the other day and I actually got stuck in the y can't Metroid crawl part. I forgot which button does the ball and pressed every one until someone said it's down twice. |

I've been playing this lately, and I have to second the recommendation - with one caveat. It's ungodly hard - the puzzles are obtuse, the gameplay is unforgiving, the bosses are tough, and it'll happily kill you in an instant in a trap if you're careless. Everyone who would try this game needs to understand that. It's the kind of game built to test yourself against. |

Depending on your system/s here are some options. PC: Cave Story, Guacamelee Gold Edition, VVVVVV, La Mulana (haven't played this one). 3DS/DS: Cave Story (3D or +), A crapton of Castlevania games (personally Order of Ecclesia is my favourite of the handheld metroidvania games but be warned it is by far the most challenging of the metroidvania styled Castlevania's), Steamworld Dig, VVVVVV, Metroid Prime Hunters (although it's definitely more focused on multiplayer than single player), Shantae: Risky's Revenge, Aliens Infestation, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate (not yet released). GBA: A crapton of Castlevania games. Vita: Guacamelee, Muramasa Rebirth. Wii/Wii-U: The Metroid Prime trilogy, classic Metroid games through e-shop, Cave Story (god damn this game is on a lot of systems), Muramasa the Demon Blade. PS3: Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Guacamelee, Outland, Demons Souls/Dark Souls (definitely not traditional examples however they fit the mould well enough to count), Batman Arkham Asylum (City is definitely less Metroidy but may still count), Bionic Commando Re-Armed. Xbox 360: Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Shadow Complex (god damnit Chair stop working on infinity Blade for two seconds and make a bloody sequel already! ), Outland, Dark Souls, Bionic Commando Re-Armed.Other: Wario Land 3 for GBC (one of my favourite games as a kid), Gargoyle's Quest 1 for gameboy, Gargoyles Quest 2 for NES and Demon's Crest for SNES, Clash at Demonhead for NES. Coming Soon: Strider for 360/PS3/XBONE/PS4 and PC, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate for Vita and 3DS, Ghost song for PC (possibly Wii-U in the future), Dark Souls 2 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Hopefully this helps out someone. |
