Why was NEO-GEO not a big successful system?; Literally Arcade games in your home.

It was like having an arcade at your home. The games for it had the same, exact quality as they were in the arcade version. They were big carts for a reason.

Ex. On Neo-Geo, Art of Fighting is exactly like it was in the arcade. Great quality of music, graphics and better controller(SNK made the console and game). While SNES/Genesis versions are inferior in every way.

Neo-Geos should have been getting some really great sales and was kind of ahead of its time. Also be a memorable console with those arcade games. What happened?

Money

it was crazy expensive

Non-existant marketing didn't help either.

Furthermore, I don't think there are too many cases where the more expensive "better" console has beat back the less powerful, usually cheaper alternative. The Gunpei Yokoi Rule applies:

Quote:

Yokoi articulated his philosophy of "Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology" (枯れた技術の水平思考?, "Kareta Gijutsu no Suihei Shikou") (also translated as "Lateral Thinking with Seasoned Technology") in the book, Yokoi Gunpei Game House (横井軍平ゲーム館?), which consists of a collection of interviews. "Withered technology" in this context refers to a mature technology which is cheap and well understood. "Lateral thinking" refers to finding radical new ways of using such technology. Yokoi held that toys and games do not necessarily require cutting edge technology; novel and fun gameplay are more important. In the interview he suggested that expensive cutting edge technology can get in the way of developing a new product.[10]

A good exemple of this was the Jaguar.

People have said money. It's important to say how much money. Individual Neo Geo game cartridges could cost $250 to $300. EACH. And $900 for the console itself.

That was the price of an arcade machine in your home in the 90s. You can see why it wasn't a success with anyone but the rich and very dedicated.

Had the Neo Geo pocket come out a few years earlier and at a decent price point it could have rivaled the game boy but coming out a year after the gameboy color and having very little third party support is what hurt it. The Barone Family who ran SNK USA really screwed everything up.

It's the same case as the 3DO, shit was mad expensive and no one outside of people who gold-plated their poodles could afford it. Which is a shame because I love both systems.

We all have different opinions and likes. Hell, I liked having glitches in Sonic 06 since they gave me a challenge. lol

I have the same reaction to people who say they liked the Dreamcast.

The 3DO is a magnificent machine. It was incredibly powerful for its time and has a selection of weird games that I love (Way of the Warrior, D) and some of the shittiest games ever made (Shadow: War of Succession, Plumbers Don't Wear Ties). Also had the best home console port of Super Street Fighter II.

But I like games like Hydlide and Drakkhen, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

The Dreamcast had some incredible first party support from Sega and an arcade quality Soul Caliber port.

The 3DO had arguable the best Road Rash, a solid version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and quite a few PC ports of varying quality.
