VGCW Observer Magazine 07-11-13 With the Drac Pack dead and defeated, VGCW moves onto a new season, centered around teams searching for the mysterious Dragon Balls. With Gaben, Jensen, Nappa, the Practice and WarioWare being in the feature, new champion Mike Haggar, and the continuing story of Casual champ Red, this could likely be the biggest season of VGCW ever. Charles Barkley still holds the MITB briefcase, and receiving a lot of chatter in the down time was Gary Oak, Scorpion, Shinya Arino, and Barret Wallace, who all could be climbing the card this year. Season Five starts huge, with a noticeable improvement in production value. The show begins with a cold open, as Barret Wallace grabs a mic and addresses the crowd from the top of the ramp, introducing special musical guest Mega Ran. Mega Ran raps 'Grow Up' from the self-titled album, until baw gawd it's Dan Hibiki. Dan heels out, threatening the celebrity guest, who is unfazed. Barret returns to challenge Dan to a match, who rejects his challenge. Then a fourth figure takes the stage, none other than Gaben to place Dan and Barret in tonight's main event, along with celebrity guest Mega Ran acting as special guest referee. Is Barret going to come up huge with a victory over top heel Dan, or can Dan overcome a potentially biased ref and show off Saikyo style? Zangief vs Solid Snake The Red Cyclone jerks the curtain free and comes out to massive in-game pop... followed by Snake, whose brilliantly synced entrance arrives to boos from the video game crowd! Early on however, both receive silence from the chat, due to a sudden influx of Twitchquality. An interesting spot early, as Snake turns a catapult throw into an inverted hotshot, choking Gief with the bottom rope. Gief takes the lead after catching Snake with a big right hand, followed by a big spinebustero and a high pop up. Gief throws a series of medium and fierce kicks to Snake, before blocking a punch and knocking him down with a spinning lariat. Near the middle of the match, Snake and Gief exchange submission holds and show off their mat wrestling. After withstanding Gief's assault, Snake lays a series of single leg dropkicks followed by a swinging neckbreaker. Snake hits two rarely successful springboard splashes. Snake lays a big DDT sold perfectly by Gief, then with perfect sync, Gief grabs Snake in a small package. Kickout, more DDTs from Snake until he misses a springboard splash. From here it's all Gief. A giant swing, and a pair of Final Atomic Busters and Gief gains the pinfall victory. It's a big push for Gief after months of being considered the weak link of Gerudo Skies, and it's burial for Snake. Despite having good characterization, Snake is simply not very effective. It's worth considering what this means for Snake's long term chances of getting near the VGCW title this season. The match itself was actually a well wrestled piece of work, low on THQuality and high on drama. Both guys should feel good about that. Team America vs The Practice This is a regular rules tag match, beginning with the massive chat pop for The Practice. Between the Masterplan and the Swag, The Practice gets a response that can only be challenged by Waluigi and WVGCW's Terra Branford. The match starts with Eggman and Guile, Dook is tagged in early, and immediately Duke gains an advantage. Worth noting is Eggman's ineffectiveness and strange behavior throughout this match, with many people wondering if Robert Nick is showing evidence of post-concussion syndrome. Wily enters in the match with a nice teamwork spot, typical for the Practice, and in addition to his educated feet, lets loose what Michael Cole calls “a royal fist”. With a tag and Doom's E1M1 playing, Guile re-enters the match, immediately going to work on Alberto. Guile controls the match for a bit until Wily hits a nice double barrelled dropkick to Guile's back. After a pair of tags, Eggman is back in, and from here you see the usual THQuality outside. No one can figure out who they want to fight, or where they want to do it. This carries on for a bit, they make it back to the ring and here is where Eggman's concussion problems become clear. After landing a flying neckbreaker and taking a bump himself, Eggman wanders around, unclear of which corner he needs to tag in. This is scary stuff that the VGCW medical staff should be watching carefully. Guile throws Eggman outside and double teams him with Dook. With Wily the legal man, Guile gets him outside, double teams him with Duke and spears Wily through the barricade. In a rarely seen event, Lt. Surge takes the stairs to the ring edge. Rushing to get back in the ring, Alberto bumps into Robert, and they narrowly escape being counted out, getting back to the ring on a 9 count. Wily takes control from here, hitting a series of lucha moves on Guile before tagging in Eggman, who quickly hits the Egg Cracker and takes the victory for the Practice. A decent match with some interesting spots, and seals the Practice as a top tag team. After the match, Gary Oak finds Luigi backstage and taunts him, challenging him to a match later that night. The chat responds huge to the Girth. Proto Man vs HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER Air Man This reviewer loves Air Man's CAW. The oven mitt, the shoulders, the mask. Great costuming. This match isn't much to write home about, it's a typical squash for a newcomer. I don't know how much staying power any Robot Master has though, they naturally have less potential than protagonists or more well developed characters. Air Man has a good look and a natural ally in Alberto, but it's going to take a long series of squashes before he appears to be anything more than a flash in the pan. Nappa vs The Practice We smash immediately backstage, where fresh off their match with Team America, the Practice are beating on the Baldman Nappa. Through repeated throws into road cases, Nappa is finally brought low by a reverse side suplex from Wily. After they attack Nappa, they steal most of his Dragon Radars. Later, we discover that during the melee, Adam Jensen snuck in and acquired a Dragon Radar for himself. Tingle vs Bison vs Segata vs Phoenix This is a fatal four way match with the reward being the #1 contender slot for the Casual belt. Phoenix enters with a point and a face overlay to big heat. The majority of this match is Tingle versus Phoenix and Bison versus Segata. Phoenix typically leads against Tingle, and Segata dominates Bison. Segata hits a top rope arm drag early in the match, and uses Table-san to drive Bison through. The chat has turned on Bison to the point where Roll is no longer F. Bison, Bison is now Male Roll. After some USB notifications, Segata lays a kick combo onto Raul Julia, followed by a big leg lariat. Bison poses while Phoenix is dazed, which Phoenix immediately responds to with a front facelock into a swinging neckbreaker, scoring the pinfall and telling Bison that for him, it was just Thursday. Moments later the match spills outside the ring, Segata hits his own swinging neckbreaker on Thomas, and gets the 3 count. Once again, THQuality, Tingle and #1 Contender matches align, and Tingle freezes the PS3. We restart the match with Segata vs Phoenix. Phoenix hits his X Factor and hits Segata with a series of clotheslines, but doesn't get the victory. As he reaches for Segata, the samurai pulls him into a small package with no pinfall scored. They move outside and Segata hits a big German suplex with a bridge, George Refstanza stays in the ring and counts to three, Segata Sanshiro is your new #1 Casual contender. A decent match somewhat lacking in star power outside of Phoenix. Gary Oak vs Luigi It had to happen. Gary Oak had to win eventually. While I never felt that Mr. L managed any sustained offense, it's worth noting that even with the upper hand all match long, it took Gary 16 minutes and several finishers to put Luigi away. Early on Luigi lays on the figure four to massive chat WOOOOOOOs. At one point, Gary pokes Luigi in the eyes and King mysteriously announces that “he had enough leg strength to resist”. Several great knife chops to the chest, with good report, continuing the Flair references. Near the end, Luigi begins to get some offense in, pounding Gary to the ground, until Gary begins the Obamaroll.... coming out the victor. While it might seem like it would be impossible to ignore Gary's girth at this point, this victory is about as small as it could possibly be. Luigi is no Ganondorf, he's hardly a Scorpion. Still, fun match, strangely positioned near the end of the show. Shinya Arino vs Kefka vs Little Mac This match is to find Mayor Mike Haggar's first opponent for the VGCW belt. Arino's massive underdog pops are starting to turn, as contrarians within the chat issue boos to the Kacho's entrance. Kefka arrives to typically positive cheers, and Little Mac to a big return pop for his first non-PPV match in months. The storyline for the majority of this match is Little Mac teaming with the heel Kefka to pound on the underdog Arino. Could this be a return of Mac's heelish ways after defeating the nefarious Dracula? Early on, Kefka hits a nice standard suplex on Judge, followed by the Kacho responding with a neckbreaker. In a innovative spot, Kefka throws Arino in the corner, who responds with a kick and is immediately flattened with a big overhead strike from the boxer. Kefka hits possibly the most ridiculous flying headscissor, with interesting cape physics. For some odd reason, Arino finds George Refstanza and hits him with a German suplex, knocking him out briefly. During this period, Kacho and the clown team up for a synced superkick. Kacho and Kefka get Youngblood outside the ring and Kacho lays brutal kicks into his back and chest, followed by a backbreaker by Kefka and a flipkick by Judge. Kefka, typical for him, changes allegiances and suddenly it's a two-on-one against Arino. Mac spears the Chief through the barricade to huge reaction. Mac moves the ring stairs into the ring for some reason, and the Kacho hits him with a Last Continue, the pin broken up by Kefka. The melee moves over to Tablesan, and then an incredible spot happens. What happens next is a combination, Kefka DDTs Mac onto Tablesan while Shinya Arino flies from the top rope to the outside with a flying dropkick striking Mac on the way down, drawing blood. It's one of the most dangerous and unbelievable stunts pulled in VGCW, shocking to the degree that it breaks Lakitu. Somehow Mac keeps going, moving back into the ring. Arino hits him with a flying clothesline, and then we go back outside. Lakitu stays on the far side of the ring, making a small package completely obstructed. In the finish, Kefka casts Stop on Arino, and Mac sees his opportunity. With the Kacho frozen, he immediately blasts the clown with the Star Punch, and gets the pinfall to become the #1 Contender for the VGCW title, showing all that Mac is back. This is the match of the night, loaded with incredible spots and a startling finish. Dan vs Barret (w/ Special Referee Mega Ran) Big pops for both of these wrestlers, Dan easily the biggest heel in company history, and Barret with the most beloved theme song. Dan comes out to a rain of boos, and after a resync the match begins. Unfortunately for the chat, Dan controls the majority of this match, with many reversals, bulldogs and jawbreakers for Barret's trouble. Barret gains an advantage around the ten minute mark, to a big pop from the chat. Dan goes through his arsenal, hitting Barret with a bulldog, a Russian legsweep and a powerslam in quick succession. Barret responds with a muscle buster that the chat goes bananas for. As boss music from FF7 begins, Dan wraps the big man into a small package, and with a fair count from ref Mega Ran, comes out the victor to MASSIVE heat. The alpha male slaps Mega Ran's hand as he attempts to perform his duties, and taunts the crowd outside the ring as the credits music plays. A much needed show of force from Dan, as despite being well hated by the chat, he has been on a long losing streak and was not establishing himself as a main event caliber contender. This might be the start of a change, it may be the start of a Barret-Dan feud. A good match to close out the season premiere with, a night of heel victories and salt. The best way to start a year. Thanks for reading and have a great day! Edited by Brodehouse, Jul 12 2013, 10:11 AM.

Indeed, and after the face shutout victories in the Season 4 finale, the heels needed some victories to increase their threat. The unexpected results of last night's match could start 2, maybe 3 new feuds. Dan needed the boost to his threat, and the Gary/Mr. L feud could generate some buzz for normally lukewarm jobber matches. However, I'm surprised you didn't mention the 3rd-best thing of the night: the vitrolic boss/assistant relationship between Gaben & Adam. The season-long rivalry over General Manager combined with their tag team partnership has created a hilarious dynamic for the office promos, with the two alternately scheming and mocking each other. It reminds me of the old comedy duos from the 30s. Between their back-and-forth banter and the great choice of music, that was the most entertaining plot I've seen in a while. Here's hoping they stay General Manager (and assistant) for a long time; I can't think of anyone else better suited for the role than those two. |

With the one exception of the "FINE DON'T GET UP" I actually thought last night was the first time Safety Valve appeared to be on the same page. Jensen acquiring the Dragon Radar in a way that both seems legitimate and yet requires no effort on his part is great booking, it gets over Jensen's skills outside the ring and makes him seem like a major player. Honestly I hope Mr. L re-emerges, but I hope he stays away from Gary. I think Gary getting his first win is great for plotting, but not remotely impressive. The only thing that would be less impressive would be if he beat Ego. The booking I would take is to have Gary find some upper-mid carder and challenge them with the same egotistical Gary stunt he pulled last night, and to have Luigi go back into his crazy place and become the masked Mr. L, performing backstage hits on beloved faces. Because he couldn't look jobbier after losing to Gary. |

Guile did nothing wrong
|
A nice read, although I feel you really didn't give the Luigi/Gary match enough credit. It was really a tense back and forth(if you don't count Luigi not using any finishers) and ended in a controversial manner. Was probably my match of the night. |

I really enjoy these writeups, like a less technical version of the Power Rankings ones. Snake is definitely the big loser of the night. Unlike Luigi who was always lousy, Snake was once thought to be pretty good, and his losing streak lately has been downright tragic. I just don't know where he goes from here. |

You should have mentioned that near the end of the tag match, Wily and Guile tagged at the same time but Duke tagged as soon as he entered the ring, which probably screwed Team America. Also, Duke saved Wily from a count out. Never bet on Douk, I lost my life savings the last time I did it.

The Dragons did NOTHING wrong

Agreed. He's now lost to Phoenix Wright AND Zangief, and is pretty much at the bottom of the rankings. The only thing saving him from being called a jobber are his past wins and having held the title. |

Face the Face: Mr. Satan's Corner This opinion column reflects the views of Mr. Satan and the Overlay Face community and does not reflect the views of the VGCW Observer or its editorial board. Champ here. What a night, and I wasn't even there. Of course, you probably saw my face in the intro. I'm enjoying the fruits of those introduction royalties as we speak. Being the champ, you're afforded a certain lifestyle, a lifestyle earned through hard work, integrity, and most of all fair play. However, there are some who do not want to succeed going the right direction. Some want to win and assert themselves with treachery and trickery. The champ saw this in spades last night unfortunately. Of course I'm talking about my former partner, Mr. Mirrors and Dirty Tricks himself, Dan Hibiki. Didn't see the cheating? That's why you're in the cheap seats and the champ is sitting in the luxury box, looking on in horror. The inexperienced official MegaRan couldn't see that devious snake Dan with the brass knuckles in his pocket. Barret was walking into a trap all along. I would have slapped that weapon out Dan's hands and shown that greenhorn ref how to do his job but...I was enjoying my dinner. Can't let good shrimp go to waste you know? New GM Gabe Newell better not give me any little kid referees in my matches or he'll be hearing some strong words from me. Anyway, the girls are asking me to get back into the hot tub, so I'll see you guys next time! Edited by Mr. Satan Overlay Face, Jul 12 2013, 12:51 PM.

Keep Calm and Get Piss
|
One thing I have to add on Gary/Weegee...the end came off one of the wonkiest ways in the game to get a win: the roll up. Considering how particular and finicky the game is about deciding when roll-ups are effective or not, it's gonna take some time to see what's up. I still don't think Luigi is as bad a wrestler as his singles record says, simply because he's had so few singles matches to begin with, and how many of them were quick matches to boot? |
