If you've never heard of SMT (or only played Persona), welcome to class bitch. Throughout the series, your player character is basically chosen to remake an apocalyptic, demon-filled world in a new image. You fight the demons in your way with of course, other demons, through summoning or pacts. There are a few supporting characters who try to sell you on their remake-the-world philosophy which usually consists of Law, Chaos, or somewhere in between.

In my opinion, IV is the hardest entry in the series yet. The difficulty goes well past Nocturne or Strange Journey, making it more on par with the older SNES games. Even demons in the beginning dungeon can fuck you up, if given the opportunity. This ain't no Persona 4. As much as I love the Persona games, nothing beats the thrill of beating back an SMT boss that totally decimated you a battle before.

Anyone else enjoying this game?

More sizzle than a rasher of bacon.
I've been playing it. My previous SMT experience is P3/4 and the two Devil Survivor games, so yeah, this is quite a next step up. Had rough times to start, but I'm getting the hang of things now. It's just tough to start from scratch and recruit demons without really knowing what you're doing. But I've learned the golden rule here: save, save, save, and that's making things work in the end.

P.S., get the hell back on Skype.

I'm not a big savescummer, but in this game I'm saving so much I'm gonna have OCD after I'm finished. :cole:

P.S. I've been working crazy amounts. I'll be back on soon!

I have been playing it a lot too. The first few hours of the game really kicked my ass but, things are going MUCH smoother now and I feel like the difficultly dropped off a bit.

P.S. We await your return, warrior!

I'd play this game if I had a 3DS. The thought of fighting an assload of demons in one encounter intrigues me, to be honest.

Enjoying it so far, I was initially reluctant that the addition of the reviving after death and the ability to select specific skills in fusion would have made the difficulty lower than the previous games, but then I quickly learned that you'll need to take every advantage you can get.

I want to play this soooo much, but since Atlus are actually a pretty terrible publisher, I don't even know if I'll EVER be a play it since I live in the UK, and there's no release date for us yet. I think it's going to be another Persona 4 Arena, cause we didn't get that until like 7 months after America? Seriously what the fucking shit did Atlus think region locking the PS3 version was a good idea?

Yeah, Atlus are a really shitty publisher, I mean sure they publish good games, but so does EA

I like Atlus, but I don't blame anyone in the EU for disliking them. They seem to give you guys the short end of the stick.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final producer Kazuyuki Yamai recently shared the latest on the upcoming game during a NicoNico Live stream. Here are some of the details that were discussed during the show.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final won’t be like Shin Megami Tensei IV with the Chaos and Law routes, but it will be all “Neutral” but with multiple endings.

They say that you don’t need to have played or completed Shin Megami Tensei IV to enjoy Final, but there will be references here and there that will bring a smile to those that have played it.

The “gauntlet” shown on the protagonist is actually his smartphone. They say that the ones worn in Shin Megami Tensei IV could be considered a smartphones as well, but in a different form.

Demons will be able to use various types of magic, even if they don’t specialize at them. When they use the magic they specialize at, they’ll be more effective.

Demon stats have been completely changed up, so those who played Shin Megami Tensei IV will experience something different.

Yamai says that Isabeau will be in Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final, and as for Flynn he says “stay tuned for more.”

He also reassures fans that Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final doesn’t mean “final” of the series, but rather, the end of Shin Megami Tensei IV. He mentions that Shin Megami Tensei V, Shin Megami Tensei VI, and so on will still keep coming, so not to worry.

The “Assist Attack” system will have your Partners show up when you’re in a pinch. You’ll also get to “raise” human characters as well as demons.

Conversations for recruiting demons have been completely renewed.

The main character will be a silent protagonist.

Asahi can be considered the heroine of the game. She’s a bit younger compared to most Shin Megami Tensei characters at age 15.

They say that the way Navarre died was very petty, and had a good laugh about it. Additionally, he’ll have more of a role in Final than he did in Shin Megami Tensei IV.

There will be about 450 demons in the game.

The “Partner” system will be something different for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final. There will be other human characters besides Asahi who will appear as Partners.

Finally, my allegiances to nobody are paying off.

Oh yeah, there's a screenshot around of Lucifer namedropping him, and I think there was a render of him floating around somewhere.

Also, I dunno, I wouldn't really call SMT4 the hardest. It has a really hardcore difficulty drop once you get to the overworld barring some very specific parts (BEELZEBUB)

DLC and Fiends notwithstanding.

SJ kicked my ass, just navigating the later sectors was a challenge in and of itself.

Keep in mind I wrote that OP in 2013 when I had just got my hands on the game. I've long since learned that IV is not anywhere near as punishing as SJ, which has a more sustained level of difficulty throughout. Hype and/or nostalgia goggles can make you say silly things.

I've also changed the thread subject to include SMT General so people can feel free to discuss other games in the mainline series, since a few people may be experiencing or revisiting in light of the new game.

Oh. I didn't even notice that. #oof# .

That said I'm cool with an SMT General. Can't decide if I want to grab Raidou 2 or the DDS series. Need to kill time until Final, and hope Final kills enough time for P5.

If IV had had Strange Journey's difficulty curve and level design it would probably be one of the best Megaten games. It's still very good, just not on the same level that and Nocturne are on.
